Thank you for being so welcoming during my first term at Skye Primary. I have truly loved getting to know all the students, families, and the wider community. It has been a joy to see the enthusiasm and curiosity of the students in their learning. As we approach the holidays, I’d like to share some ideas for how children can continue learning during the break in fun and engaging ways.

Continuing Learning Over the Holidays

The holidays are a time for children to relax, recharge, and spend quality time with loved ones. However, maintaining some level of learning during this break is essential to avoid the "holiday slide," a term used to describe the learning loss that can occur when children take an extended break from academic activities. Research shows that students who don’t read or engage in educational activities over the holidays can lose up to two months of reading progress. Incorporating fun and engaging learning activities into the holiday routine can help children stay on track academically while still enjoying their break.

The Importance of Reading

Reading is one of the most effective ways to keep children learning during the holidays. Studies have found that daily reading not only improves vocabulary and comprehension but also fosters a lifelong love for learning. To make reading more appealing, encourage children to choose books they find interesting, whether it’s an adventurous story, a graphic novel, or a nonfiction book about a favourite topic. Local libraries often host holiday reading challenges or themed activities, which can motivate children to explore new books. Parents can also make reading a family activity by setting aside time for everyone to read together or by starting a family book club.

Hands-On Learning Activities

Holidays provide the perfect opportunity to engage kids in hands-on learning activities that are both educational and enjoyable. For example, cooking together can teach children valuable math and science skills as they measure ingredients, follow recipes, and observe changes in food during cooking. Similarly, building projects like constructing a birdhouse, creating a LEGO masterpiece, or assembling a model kit can encourage problem-solving and critical thinking. Arts and crafts, such as painting, sewing, or making holiday decorations, not only nurture creativity but also improve fine motor skills.

Outdoor Exploration and Real-World Learning

Spending time outdoors can also be a fantastic way to learn during the holidays. Activities like visiting local parks, nature reserves, or museums provide opportunities for children to explore the world around them. They can learn about science, history, and geography through interactive exhibits and guided tours. Even a simple nature walk can turn into an educational adventure by identifying plants, animals, or insects. Parents can encourage children to keep a nature journal to document their findings and observations.

Using Technology Wisely

While screen time should be balanced, educational apps and online resources can be excellent tools for holiday learning. Apps like Duolingo can help children practice a new language, while platforms such as Khan Academy offer engaging lessons in various subjects. 

Additionally, websites like Storyline Online feature celebrities reading children’s books, making Storytime both entertaining and educational.

By incorporating a mix of reading, hands-on activities, outdoor exploration, and technology, children can continue to learn in meaningful and enjoyable ways over the holidays. These strategies not only prevent learning loss but also foster curiosity and a love for discovery that will benefit them long after the holidays are over.
