CURRICULUM FOCUS

This week in Mathematics, the Grade 2s are learning how to compare the areas of shapes that are different.

VOCABULARY

Area: The amount of space inside a shape or surface.

Square Units: A unit used to measure area, typically represented as a square with each side measuring one unit.

Compare: To examine the similarities and differences between two or more areas.

Measure: To determine the size, length, or amount of something.

Estimate: To make an approximate calculation of the size or amount.

ACTIVITIES YOU CAN DO AT HOME TO SUPPORT YOUR CHILD'S LEARNING

Estimate and Measure: Ask your child to estimate the area of various items (e.g., a book, a piece of paper) before measuring them with square units.

Discuss how close their estimates were to the actual measurements.
