Grade 2 Levers

The Grade 1/2 students have been working their way through the “Machine Makers” unit, and this week’s focus has been on the lever. Students investigated how they work, and how they are helpful to our lives. Students got to create their own lever and test it out, and we had an absolute blast. Students practiced patience, persistence, and resilience to achieve success in this lesson. Well done!

Grade 4 Ring magnets/Floating paperclips

The Grade 3/4 students investigated a different type of magnet this week – the ring magnet. Students had to discover where the poles are in a magnet with no ends, and were able to model attraction and repulsion by flipping the rings over to see the impact on the other ring magnets. Students measured the strength of a magnet’s force by measuring the distance between the magnets, and discovered many different things about how you can strengthen the force of a magnet. Students were then set the challenge, “Can you make a paperclip float?” and students showed a range of problem solving skills, including predicting, testing and checking, to see if they could be the first to solve the problem. Well done to all those who did!
