Cranbourne Campus News

Just a little while longer

We have hit the middle of November, meaning there are only three weeks of school left, two weeks of which will have their own fresh start as we embark upon Headstart. (For our new and Year 7 families, Headstart is when we roll the College timetable over and students move into their 2025 classes / subjects.) In these final weeks there will be students whose journey at St Peter's draws to an end as they seek out apprenticeships and full time TAFE options - we wish these students all the very best and trust that the lessons and skills developed here at St Peter's hold them in good sted for their next endeavours.

Other students will be nervously waiting to see which classes they are in for 2025 while still finishing off their assessments for 2024. Whether awaiting an exciting new opportunity outside of St Peters or working toward having a strong 2025 with Headstart, it is important not to ‘drop the ball early’ (ie. give up on effort), and instead work diligently right through to the end. We have just a little while longer and sticking to routines and working hard sets you up for the next phase of your learning journey, whatever that phase might look like.

SBAT - Parks and Gardens

I was fortunate enough to be invited to the graduation of our students from the School based Apprenticeship program ‘Parks and Gardens’ that we hosted on the Cranbourne campus. Over the years this has been an excellent alternative learning option equipping the students with knowledge, skills, experiences and a qualification that will stay with them forever. Under the guidance of trainer Steve Goodie, the students came together to create some excellent projects on the campus using what they have learned to improve the presentation of the campus. It was pleasing to see the appreciation shown by the students and families as the students were awarded their certificates. We look forward to the continuation of this course as one that gives opportunity to students who value a more practical learning opportunity. [Maybe if courses like these were around in my time my roses wouldn’t keep dying…]

Thank you to Steve and our two support assistants Josh and Jeanette for the work they have done to encourage and enthuse this group in their training. And congratulations to the following students who graduated from Parks and Gardens in 2024:

Year 9 Camp

As we greeted the bus on arrival back from Camp One I was blown away from the positivity of the students and teachers who were all beaming despite evidence of levels of exhaustion and lack of sleep. Reports back from the first Year 9 Camp were glowing and while those on the second camp may not get the best of the weather I am assured that so far the first night was a success for them all.

Students in Year 9 have the opportunity to experience some of the water sport activities that many of them wouldn’t otherwise get, such as stand-up paddle boarding, surfing and surf kayaking, all led by trained instructors with all the correct safety gear and supervision. These new opportunities for the students are outstanding but in many ways it is secondary to the pastoral and relationship building benefits of spending two nights away with classmates and teachers really getting to know each other in a different context. Each year we have run the Year 9 camp there has been a notable change in the maturity of the returning students  and we look forward to that again with this group of Year 9’s.

Thank you to the staff who gave time away from families to ensure that this experience could go ahead. A special thanks goes to our camp leaders Ms Edwards and Mrs Hemming and Camps coordinator Mr Bardi.
