Grade 1 Community News

Hello Grade 1 Families,

We can’t believe we are halfway through the last term! Our Grade 1 students have been exploring the last topics of the year and continuously putting in their best efforts in all learning areas. Here is some of what we have been getting up to in our Grade 1 community over the past fortnight.

In reading, we have begun our new unit where students are learning about animals and their habitats. We want to investigate why plants and animals live where they do. In this unit so far, we have looked at animals of the Antarctic, the Sonoran Desert and of the East African Savannah. We have learnt about how these animals survive in their habitats and then drawing and labelling a chosen animal.

The reading unit ties nicely into our new writing unit of Informative Texts. The students are learning about the features of a non-fiction text and are beginning a new writing cycle on their chosen animal to write an information text. The students are very excited to continuing to learn more about animals to assist them in their informative pieces.

In Maths, we have started our new topic of Time. We have learnt a lot so far like days of the week and months of the year. We have discussed the duration of events in seconds, minutes and hours and looking at the features of a clock and reading the time to the half hour. This has been a fun hands-on topic that the students have been enjoying.

Friendly Reminders:

 •    Please ensure your child is bringing their reading satchel to school with their student journal, so we can celebrate your child’s reading milestones.

•    Please ensure your child has a Tarneit Rise Primary School hat so they can play outside during recess and lunch.

•    Please ensure your child is bringing a water bottle to school, and if they wish, cut up fruit in containers to eat during learning time.

•    The Werribee Zoo excursions will soon begin for some of the grade 1’s so please ensure you have paid by Thursday, 21st November.
