Dear Prep families and carers,

We are excited to share the fantastic learning experiences happening in our classroom during Weeks 5 & 6. This term has flown by, and we cannot believe the amazing growth we continue to see each day with our prep students!

Synthetic Phonics:

In Week 5, we learned two new sound rules /ai/ and /ay/, where /ai/ says /a/ in the middle and sometimes at the start of a word. Along with /ay/ which says /a/ at the end of a word. In Week 6, we will be learning the new sound rules for /oa/ and /ow/, where /oa/ says /o/ in the middle and sometimes at the start of a word. Along with /ow/ which says /ow/ at the end of a word. We also have two new Heart Words that we have been practising:

Reading:

This term, we have been using our serial text ‘The Enchanted Wood’ to continue developing our skills in reading. We have been practising predicting what will happen before and during reading the chapter. Predicting is making a good and sensible guess about what we think is going to happen next in the story. We predict by using texts clues such as words and pictures to help us and use our prior knowledge on what we already know and have experienced. We have been making amazing predictions! 

Writing:

We are learning to write lists and cards. Last week, we concentrated on writing shopping lists, such as fruits and vegetables. This week, we will be learning how to write cards, to our friends and family.

Maths: 

In Week 5, we continued to explore and learn about the capacity of containers. We measured the capacity of the containers using the same measuring tool (sand, water, unifix blocks), when then explored which container held the most and which container held the least.

In Week 6, we are learning to identify Australian money. We will explore both notes and coins and understand the importance of money and how we use it in our day to day lives. Students will also have the opportunity to engage with money through play, by creating their own shops within the classroom.

Incursion at Animal Land

Next week on Thursday the 21st & 22nd of November our prep students have an excursion at Animal Land, and we’re looking forward to experiencing horseback riding, tractor rides, and milking cows at the farm! Please check Compass as payment and consent for the excursion closes this week.
