Grade 6 Community News
Greeting Grade 6 Families,
We’re already at the end of week 6. Over halfway there! Our Grade 6 students are getting so excited for their graduation festivities. Our stimulating work units have been ensuring our learners are refining their skills before moving onto high school.
Reading:
In reading, we have continued our focus of poetry, further delving into how we can analyse and compare poems. Using their knowledge of figurative language, students have identified similarities and differences between poems by the same and different authors. Additionally, students have enjoyed visualising poems and illustrating these ensuring to capture the emotions and themes within the poem. Refining their skills to answer complex questions, students have practised backing up their answers with evidence from the poem. This will be a necessary skill going into secondary school!
Writing:
Grade 6 is pleased to inform you our scrapbooks are beginning to come together beautifully. Through working in a small group, students have been able to share ideas, give and receive feedback and ensure their work is to the best of their ability.Exploring different genres such as news reports and persuasive speech writing, students are using a range of linguistic features to level up their writing. Learners have also had the opportunity to use their digital technology skills when publishing some of their work. If there are any additional images that students want to add to their scrapbook, now is the time to bring these in! I’m sure you are all in great anticipation to see the final product and we cannot wait to reveal them soon at the scrapbook viewing on week 9.
Maths:
In maths, we have been exploring shape and angles. In our shape unit we focused on comparing prisms and pyramids. We must remember for a 3D shape to be considered a prism, it must have 2 identical and parallel faces as well as ALL flat faces. We then went on to identify, draw and construct 3D nets for these shapes. In angles, we are really honing in on our problem solving skills in order to calculate missing angles. We will then use this knowledge to construct a mini golf course map, creating various obstacles at certain angles. We very much enjoy applying our knowledge in real-life situations.
Vocab:
Our vocabulary lessons comprise words directly from the poems that we’re studying this term:
