Grade 3 Community News
Dear Grade 3 Families,
The last few weeks have been very busy with exciting, engaging and fun for our grade 3 students! The students have been learning with a buzz of excitement and as always, striving for growth!
Reading
We have started the unit on Ecology. Students are learning about the feeding patterns among animals, including food webs, and how all living species in an ecosystem are interdependent and interconnected with each other. Furthermore, students will learn about changes to the environment, due to natural occurrences and the actions of people. Students will also discover ways they can help conserve resources and protect the environment.
Writing
The students have written historical recounts using their knowledge gained from Read2Learn to write a recount about a day in the life of a Viking. They have learnt about the structure and features of a historical recount and with the use of the rubric and Bump it Up wall they have written a detailed recount. The students have learnt to include descriptive and emotive language to describe their person, to help bring their recount to life. Using the writing technique of ‘Show don’t tell’ students have written great sentences, for example, ‘My jaw set and my grip tightened on the oar, each stroke pulling us closer to the distant shore’ instead of ‘The Viking was determined’. This technique has shown drama unfold on a page!
Following from this unit is Persuasive writing, where the students will write a persuasive piece of writing with the use of the rubric. They will include emotive language to attempt to persuade the audience to agree with someone’s point of view by creating an emotional reaction.
Maths
We have been learning about Money. The students have represented money values in various ways and correctly counted out change from financial transactions. This has linked very nicely with our Content Area lessons about ‘Banqer’. Banqer is a financial education platform for the 21st Century, covering a range of life skills. The students will explore a range of essential financial concepts from income to banking, property to Superannuation.
The unit after money is ‘Chance’ where the students are learning how to conduct chance experiments, identify and describe possible outcomes and recognise variation in results. This unit will enable students to apply the language of chance. Also to make sense of their experiences, identify options, judge the likelihood of events and make informed decisions in situations of uncertainty.
Vocabulary
During our eating time, we have been reading the first Harry Potter book. This is also our topic for vocabulary. Each week we look at 5 words that can be found in our book. In week 5, we looked at the meanings for the following words:
Athletics
Last Monday we attended our Grade 3 House Sports Athletics Carnival. Each event ran for 30 minutes and all students had the opportunity to participate in all the activities. The first three places received a ribbon and all students were allocated house points. A massive thank you for all the families who supported this event, the students had an amazing time!
Reminders:
- Please remember to send your child to school with a charged iPad
- Ask your child if they need any new stationery
- Remember to keep up the nightly reading at home, and bring the student journal to school on their designated day
- Please ensure that your child is bringing a hat
- Please ensure that your child is only bringing water in their drink bottle.
Attendance:
It is crucial that all students are attending school every day so they can work on their learning goals and don’t miss important lessons. Please book holidays during school holiday periods rather than during the school term to make sure valuable learning time is not missed.
