Welcome to NBC Family Learning Centre

And what a fabulous term 3 at the Family Learning Centre.

So much to do, to learn and to celebrate… .

We learned a lot about road safety this term – with Thingle Toodle!

Through the performance by lively character of 'Thingle Toodle,' children are exposed to road safety in a playful and memorable way that grabs their attention.

Meet our wonderful Kindergarten educators and assistants.

Learning and Reflecting on term 3

Museum Victoria ‘Dinosaurs & Fossils

Incursion –  Joanne, teacher

Kinder 4/ Kurrman Room were excited to have Rowena from Melbourne Museum visit our kinder today. She shared her knowledge of dinosaurs with the children and brought in dinosaur fossils from the museum’s collection to show the children.

Rowena from explained the role of palaeontologists as a ‘dinosaur scientists’ to the children, and explained how fossils are formed over time from dinosaur bones and teeth.

The children moved their bodies like dinosaurs and noticed the physical features of different species of dinosaurs.

The children were very excited to see real-life dinosaur fossils within their own kinder classroom (!), as individual children asked Rowena lots of thoughtful questions throughout the session.

C: “It has a long neck.”

I: “That dinosaur is my friend.”

(Rowena identifies dinosaur as brachiosaurus)

Z: “I was going to say that!”

C: “It eats grass.”

Rowena: “When dinosaurs were alive there     was no grass…”

C: “What about the sharks?”  (Rowena informs the children that T-Rex’s ate other dinosaurs)

M: “That’s disgusting. (Guessing dinosaur’s species) (Is it a) Dinosaurs? It (pinecone) looks like dinosaur food.”

Breakfast Program

At kinder, we  have been celebrating children's achievement and success such as: independently serving themselves, patiently  waiting for their turns, confidently communicating with their peers, kindly asking for help; cordially making requests according to their needs and happily engaging in activities such as Book Week dress up, Science Week and R U Ok Day.

We have been noticing great development in terms of fine motor skills, hand and eye coordination  and dexterity through the use of breakfast utensils and other equipment in relation to the program.

The children had been making decisions on what to have for breakfast,  selecting the colours of their bowls, plates & cutleries and retrieving them independently using their own initiative.

Activities from the Wordel room at ELC

Father’s Day crafts

News from the Wordel room

Children in the Wordel room got really excited and creative in the Wordel room, preparing their “Father’s Day” activities and gifts earlier this month, imagining and creating different card styles to make a card for their dad/special person.

This activity gave the children the opportunity to have conversations with their peers and educators about the dad/special person, they all spoke about how much they loved their special person and say why they loved them with a big smile of their face.

Children making and giving greeting cards for Father's Day helps develop early writing skills, foster creativity and self-expression, and build strong social-emotional bonds by expressing love and gratitude.

  • Encourages Social Interaction:
  • Cultivates Cultural Awareness: Participating in celebrations like Father's Day helps children learn about different cultural traditions and understand the significance of special days.
  • Provides a Tangible Outcome: The completed card serves as a concrete representation of the child's efforts and feelings, making the experience more rewarding and memorable.

Most importantly, activities such as these support a positive environment, allowing children to express their emotions in a safe and supportive environment.
