Junior School

Congratulations to all the year 7 and 8 students for a successful term 3. Students are to be commended for their positive attitude to learning and for their efforts and achievements throughout the term. Our theme for this term was resilience and throughout this term we have seen and witness a growth in resiliency across the Junior School.

Thank you to the students for their outstanding commitment to their learning. Teachers have sung the praises of our Junior School students who have shown respect, readiness to learn and developed strong connections as a cohort. There is a big sense of pride, teaching a group of students who are interested in learning, showing kindness towards others and making the Junior School a great place to be. Thank you to each individual student for making this happen.

Year 7 and 8 Students both participated in end-of-term celebration assemblies today. Please ask your child what they feel proud about from their term at DSC and how may they build upon this in term 4.

Thank you to the families for your guidance and support at home. We know that the successes of our cohort come from the values that our families install at home. Over Term 4, we look forward to continuing our partnerships with families and setting students up for success in 2026

Insights from Our High-Growth Students: A Guide for Parents

We recently spoke with students who showed outstanding growth in their Year 7 and Year 9 NAPLAN results to learn about the habits and strategies that led to their success. Their powerful insights show that hard work, curiosity, and a positive mindset are key ingredients for learning.

Here are some of the most common themes that emerged from our conversations:

1. The "Work First, Play Later" Mindset: Many of our top-performing students talked about the importance of getting their academic work done first to earn their free time. As one student put it, "I do what I need to do before what I want to do." This proactive approach allows them to relax and enjoy their hobbies—like gaming, sports, or music—without worrying about uncompleted tasks.

2. The Power of Self-Directed Learning: Our high-growth students are active learners who don't just rely on classroom instruction. They seek out information on their own, using resources like Khan Academy, educational videos, and books to deepen their understanding of a topic. One student's motto was, "Curiosity takes me places," which perfectly captures their passion for learning new things outside of school.

3. Embracing Mistakes and Seeking Help: These students view challenges as opportunities. Instead of being discouraged by a low-test score, they use it as a guide for what to study next. They also know when to ask for help, whether it's from a friend, a teacher, or a parent. As one student shared, they faced a challenge on a test and "overcame it by revising my mistakes."

4. Reading and Writing for Pleasure: A love for reading came up repeatedly. Students who read for fun, regardless of the genre, noticed that it positively impacted their academic performance. It expanded their vocabulary and improved their writing skills, helping them find a natural "flow" in their writing.

Your child's success is a partnership between home and school. By encouraging self-discipline, curiosity, and a growth mindset, you can help them continue on their path to achieving their full potential.
