TERM 3  -  ART

This term our young artists have been busy drawing inspiration from themselves and created self-portraits. The Juniors observed explicit skills modelled and then with a photo or mirror drew realistic facial features with only a grey lead. Through exploring the element of line and shape each portrait came to life. To complete their pieces the artists designed a background with their favourite primary/secondary colours and finger prints.

The Seniors showed two sides of themselves, realism and abstract art, in their self-portrait. With explicit modelling and the help of a photo or mirror, the artists used a grey lead and focussed on the elements of line, shape and tone to draw realistic facial features.

Then, inspired by Italian artist Giuseppe Arcimboldo’s painting ‘Vertumnus’, the young artists expressed themselves with fruit and vegetables and the same elements to add creativity, detail and depth. To complete their pieces they explored dabbing, streaking and blending techniques with a paint brush to design monochromatic backgrounds (using a base colour and black and white paint). Our young artists’ wonderful work will be on display in the walkways for you to see this term.

If you would like to donate bubble wrap or newspaper to use at school for future art projects early next term, please send it through your child to give it to Melissa. Thank you!

LS1 SENIORS

In LS1, we have been exploring how Australia has transformed over time and specifically, the people who have played a significant role in shaping our nation.

A key focus of our learning (for the past two weeks) has been on influential Indigenous Australians.

Students have engaged in research to learn about remarkable Indigenous figures and have reflected on how the gifts and fruits of the Holy Spirit can be seen in their lives and actions.

The students have found out many interesting and inspiring facts, such as:

  • Ash Barty has openly been proud of her Indigenous heritage and has used her voice to advocate for and inspire First Nations communities.

  • Archie Roach uses the gift of songwriting to teach Australians about the story of the Stolen Generation, especially through his famous song- "They took the

    Children away”.

We have also been talking a lot about bullying in line with “Bullying No Way” - a National Week of Action. It is wonderful to see the students being reflective about this important issue.

In one lesson, the students were asked to write a pledge to stop bullying.

Some of their responses were:

  • To be an upstander instead of a bystander.
  • To tell a teacher if a person is being bullied
  • To pick up for yourself.

At school, we will continue to talk about bullying and the multifaceted nature of this concept. We ask you to take some time to do this also at home.

LEARNING SPACE 1 JUNIORS

In Learning Space 1 Juniors, we have been learning about prayer and how it helps us talk and listen to God. Together, we created a special prayer place in our Learning space where we can gather, be still and share our prayers. This space reminds us that God is with us and that we can pray anytime, anywhere.

We made a prayer place for Home Group TB which I like because I got to have a say in what went on the table – Havaanti.

I like the prayer place because it has the Holy Bible and it makes me feel good as I can talk to God there – Mia D.

The prayer place is for when you have time, you can go there to pray and this makes me happy – Levi

Making a prayer place for Home Group IB makes me feel good because everyone can share in this place – Deavruth

It was nice to make a prayer place for Home Group MA because we can all share this special place – Anais

It makes me happy that we have our very own prayer place because we all got to decorate it - Leila

GRADE 5/6 RESUSCITATE A MATE PROGRAM

This year we have once again organised Lifesaving Victoria to deliver the ‘Resuscitate a Mate Program’ for the Grade 5/6 students. Life Saving Victoria’s Multicultural Resuscitate a Mate program is designed to introduce participants to emergency response management (DRSABCD). In the 1 hour interactive session, participants learn the steps to follow in an emergency situation and the skills to potentially save a life. This program is delivered by a trained Lifeguard.

The program will be delivered on Friday September 12th and will build on what the students have already learnt in their St John’s First Aid session.

Students may wear their sports uniform and we ask parents to please acknowledge the notification sent out via Operoo.

WHOLE SCHOOL EVENTS

SFS AFTER SCHOOL AUSKICK PROGRAM IS BACK!

Our SFS Auskick Clinics continued on Wednesday. The students who were there had a great time learning lots of new AFL skills.

A reminder to parents whose child is registered the third afterschool Auskick session will be next Wednesday 10th September. Your child may wear their sports uniform on Wednesday. Parents please remember access to the school oval will be via the pedestrian gate at the front of the school near the rainbow playground once the gates are closed at 3.30pm.

TERM 4 SWIMMING

Thank you to all the parents who have completed the swimming Operoo form. If parents who have not completed it, could please do so as soon as possible as I will need to provide Casey Race with final numbers.

A swimming ability form was sent home for all prep students and any new students enrolled this year. Casey Leisure has records for the students that attended last year. Forms should have already been returned to your child’s home group teacher. If you haven’t yet, could it please be returned by Monday. These will be passed onto the pool so that students can be placed into their initial groups. Students will be further assessed in their first swimming lesson.

Parents who have volunteered to assist the juniors, I will be checking that your Working with Children Check is current and registered with the school office. I will then be in contact with you prior to swimming beginning.

Swimming timetables have been uploaded onto the Operoo permission form as an attachment. Please print it off and ensure you have it available at home. Parents please note you are welcome to attend Casey Race to view your child’s lesson but photographs and videos are not allowed and only parents I have contacted will be able to assist in the junior change rooms.

A reminder to parents that swimming is an important part of the PE curriculum and all students are expected to attend. It’s imperative that students know how to keep themselves safe around water. If there is a medical reason your child cannot attend, you will need to provide a medical certificate for your child to be exempt. They will then remain at school in another Learning Space.
