Hello from 6K

We have been having so much fun in 6K!

This term, we have been exploring our Inquiry topic, ‘Are we over exploiting our oceans?’. Students chose between Plastics and Chemicals, Overfishing, Climate Change and Habitat Destruction. They then chose their topic and were on a mission to create a poster that details what the issue is, how it is caused, and how humans can help reverse or reduce the impact. At the end of our discoveries, students have created the most wonderful posters on a variety of topics They should be very proud of their efforts as they have become world-conscious people that care deeply about their planet.

Our literacy unit on the 1967 Referendum has been a transformative learning experience. In 1967, a referendum was held that asked Australians to vote on a change to the constitution that would allow First Nations Australians to be recognised as part of the Australian population. Before the referendum, First Nations Australians were not legally considered people and were not allowed the same rights as non-Indigenous Australians. Throughout the 1960s, activism to raise awareness of the treatment of First Nations Australians cultivated a wave of support for the referendum, eventually resulting in a successful amendment to the constitution so that First Nations Australians would be counted as part of the Australian population.

Students have done a deep dive into this culturally significant moment in Australian history, that created a shift in the way Australian recognises and respects its Traditional Owners. This topic sparked brilliant conversations in 6K and every student has deepened their knowledge on Indigenous Australia’s history.
