Principal Update

Thursday 4 September 2025

Dear Families, Students and Community Members,

I do hope that this newsletter finds you very well as we move gently into Spring.

Parent Teacher Interview Day

With over 2579 appointments attended throughout the day, I think we can agree that this was a big hit! A huge thank you to families who were able to join us online, we really do recognise the importance of working closely with you to support your child’s every success here at Mordialloc College.

We did contact families about staff absences during the day; if this has created an issue for you as regards you not being able to find out something specific about your child’s progress, please email us on mordialloc.co@education.vic.gov.au  Please include details of your child’s name, subject, normal classroom teacher and query so that we can provide you with some information in this space.

Year 7 2026

I am really proud to share that we continue to be the school of choice in the area, and we are nearly full for Year 7 2026. Over the next two weeks, we will be holding SEAL interviews, and working through data to select our Year 7 2026 classes. We have a wide range of supports to welcome our next cohort of families into our Mordialloc College community; if you have any ideas about how we as a community can further support our new families, please reach out and let me know.

Staff Professional Learning Day

As a school, we have Professional Learning days where all staff work collaboratively on a key improvement area, using research based interventions to further evolve how we deliver on our promise to ensure that Mordialloc College is an even better place to learn. On 25th August, our focus was Meeting Our Students At Their Point Of Need, with both Teaching and Educational Support staff receiving professional learning around Disability Inclusion, Child Safe Procedures, Responsive Teaching, and Creating Independent Learners. With over one hundred members of staff engaging in a full day of Professional Learning, it was great to be involved in such diligently planned, and passionately delivered workshops. A huge thanks to all staff who fully committed to the assignment!

Tied in with our commitment to excellent Teaching and Learning, we were visited by Dr. Jenny Donovan, the inaugural CEO of the Australian Education Research Organisation (AERO). AERO’s research has informed much of the new Victorian Teaching & Learning Model 2.0 which is currently being rolled out across the state, and which we have used to design our own Mordialloc College Instructional Model 2.0, and Positive Behaviours for Learning matrix. Jenny spent time with Bryony Lowe (Instructional Coach) and myself, engaging us in deep discussion about final considerations before we roll these documents out to our families for their questions. A massive thanks to Jenny for taking the time to visit us whilst she was in Melbourne.

A Tale Of The Tunnels - Drama Club Performance Evening

On Wednesday 27th August, our Drama Club performed their self-written performance about the mystery tunnels underneath Mordialloc College! Students from Year 7 to Year 12 were involved in acting, lighting and sound, and our current Year 12 students also got their big goodbye from their Drama Club friends and families.

A huge thanks to Bella Kennedy and Claire Bruce who have gone above and beyond in the drama space, providing our students and community with the Drama Performance Evening. I went along, and it was a brilliant event that showcased our students’ talents, enthusiasm, and passion for the school.

Aboriginal Cultural Celebration

This Tuesday 2nd September was the official unveiling of our Aboriginal Mural - The Journey. We were joined by our Aboriginal students, our student leaders, families, David Beckett (School Council President) and Mr Stuart Edwards (Department of Education). Uncle Josh and his son joined us from the Bunurong Land Council Aboriginal Corporation; Uncle Josh provided our Welcome to Country, and educated us about Country whilst conducting a smoking ceremony to acknowledge this significant event.

I am always impressed by what our students can do, and this time, it was our Aboriginal students Jack, Ewan, Leo and Sam, and our student leaders Zed, AJ and Vincent who created the opportunity for the Mordialloc College community to learn from their work, not just now, but for generations to come; I really do thank our students for their wonderful art.
