Important Traits of a School Captain

At the start of Term 4 our current Year 5 students indicate their interest in leadership roles for next year. With this in mind, the 2025 Year 6 School Captains were asked to reflect on their own time as school leaders and to think about what traits they believe are important to have and develop to be a successful School Captain.

Good morning/afternoon, welcome back to the final term of 2025. This week I will be talking about the qualities the school captains should have for next year. The qualities they need are: being confident, speaking well publicly, and patience. Being confident is important because you need to speak at assembly, communicate with adults and express your thoughts and ideas to others. However, confidence is something that can develop with practice; you do not necessarily have to come to the role with already well-developed confidence, but you need to commit to developing it as a personal skill. Public speaking is also a skill that can develop over time, it is great if you have already confidence in this area but once again practice makes perfect. In my very first assembly I was so scared I might mess up and embarrass myself. I had butterflies in my stomach, but that feeling entirely vanished after a couple of assemblies.  “Beyond every storm lies a rainbow.”-me. What this means is after every problem (storm) lies a prize/gift (rainbow). Patience is important because you need to give yourself the time and opportunities to improve yourself in these ways. Being patient and staying calm means you can make it through any challenge.

Hi everyone, it’s Sham! With the School Captains of 2026 being voted on as we speak, we thought it would be fun if this week we write about what it means to be a great School Captain. Being a School Captain isn’t just about having a badge or standing up at assemblies. It’s about being a leader, setting a good example, and helping make our school the best it can be.

A great School Captain shows leadership by always doing the right thing, even when no one is watching. They follow the school rules, try their best in everything they do, and encourage others to do the same.

Kindness is another very important trait. A good School Captain treats everyone with respect and is always ready to lend a hand. Whether it’s helping a teacher, welcoming new students, or cheering up a classmate, kindness makes a big difference.

Confidence is the biggest part of being a captain. Speaking in front of the school can make you feel nervous, but a captain should believe in themselves and speak clearly even if they are feeling nervous or worried.

The best School Captains are kind, confident, responsible, and great role models for everyone. These traits help create a positive school environment. To all the Year 5’s being considered for School Captain, good luck! I hope you get the role you're looking for. And even if you don't get the role you want, don't worry! There are loads of options for other captains (e.g house captain, art captain) even being a Year 6 in the first place is all about leadership.

Hello, today I am going to tell you about the traits that, I believe, School Captains should have. I believe that the most important traits of being a School Captain are:

  1. Confidence: You need confidence to be a good public speaker because it is the responsibility of School Captains to run and speak at full school assemblies.
  2. Communication: As a School Captain there are many situations where you must communicate clearly and appropriately to teachers, parents and students. You must have the ability to speak in a way that is applicable to these different audiences.
  3. Helpful: You should help everyone at every chance and be a role model to all students
  4. Respect: Respect other people’s choices and opinions.
  5. Responsibility: Take responsibility for your actions and assigned tasks.
  6. Cooperative: It is necessary to work together with the other School Captains, the Year 6 teachers and Miss Epskamp in order to get different tasks done to the highest standard.
