Baby Chicks

As part of our Term Three inquiry into how living things need energy to survive, we were thrilled to welcome some very special guests into our classrooms: baby chicks from Henny Penny Hatching!

After proving to Mrs Barletta that we are indeed caring, responsible, and knowledgeable, she announced at assembly that we had earned permission to have chicks. Our chick-cam helped the whole school connect and share in the excitement, with students tuning in from home and from class. A huge thank you to Darcy for helping to set this up, and to everyone who connected to join in the excitement! We also had many after school visitors who were kind and respectful by helping keep our chicks safe and calm.

We thought we knew a lot about living things, but our chicks have taught us so much more. We’ve learned about their life cycle, needs for survival, and some surprising facts- like chickens having more neck bones than a giraffe! They’ve also inspired wonderful learning across the curriculum: from counting hatched eggs and chicks in Maths, to writing some very impressive chick-inspired sentences.

The joy these chicks have brought to our community has been a highlight of the year. Thank you to our families, teachers, and of course Henny Penny Hatching for making this experience so special. We wish our chicks happy, healthy lives as they grow into hens and roosters at Mr Farmer Smith’s farm and Jizelle and Hazel’s home. Thank you for adopting and taking such great care of our baby chickens!

Excursion to Melbourne Zoo!

On Monday 15th September, our Foundation students set off on their first ever excursion to the Melbourne Zoo as part of our Sharing the Planet inquiry, and what an incredible (and windy!) day it was!

A highlight of the day was seeing Tambi (also known as Noodle!), the adorable baby giraffe, and hearing stories about how zookeepers care for him. The cheeky meerkats had everyone giggling, and the seals wowed us with their underwater twists and turns. This hands-on experience brought our learning to life, helping students understand the needs of living things while deepening their curiosity and care for the natural world. What a wonderful way to celebrate and reflect on our unit of inquiry.

We are delighted to share that all students demonstrated safe, kind and respectful behaviour throughout the day. A huge shout out and thank you to our amazing parent volunteers, who generously volunteered their time to accompany us. They guided small groups and made the day so special, we couldn’t have done it without you. Check out some of the action from the Melbourne Zoo!
