Celebrating Diwali: The Festival of Lights

As global learners and leaders at Essendon North Primary School, we continuously encourage our students to engage with diverse cultures and respect different perspectives, traditions, and beliefs.

One of our guiding statements, Critical Engagement with the World, is embedded in all our practices. It emphasizes the importance of developing a strong sense of self and personal identity while nurturing students as compassionate, engaged global citizens ready to make a positive impact.

In alignment with these values, it’s important that we acknowledge and celebrate cultural events that are meaningful to the families within our community. This brings us to Diwali, a joyful and significant festival we are thrilled to celebrate together.

What is Diwali?

Diwali, also known as Deepavali, is a Hindu festival that celebrates the triumph of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance. Often called the Festival of Lights, it is one of the most important holidays in Hindu culture and is also observed by Sikh, Jain, and Buddhist communities in various regions.

Diwali spans five days and is filled with beautiful traditions. Families decorate their homes with oil lamps called diyas, create colourful rangoli patterns, exchange gifts and sweets, and enjoy festive meals together. On the main day, families offer prayers to Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity and fireworks light up the night sky, symbolizing hope and joy.

Why Celebrate Diwali at ENPS?

Recognizing celebrations like Diwali within our school community promotes intercultural understanding, respect for diversity, and appreciation for the shared values that connect us all: lightkindness, and new beginnings.

We warmly invite parents to share their cultural traditions, performances and stories at next week’s Year 3–6 school assembly. If you’d like to be involved, please contact Mrs Mac at Sharon.Mcwhinney@education.vic.gov.au.

Celebrating Diwali reminds us of the light we can each bring to our community through kindness, understanding, and respect.

Deepavali ki Hardik Shubhkamnayein.

Heartfelt wishes for a joyful Diwali.
