Kylie Clarke 3A, Jenny Dare 3B, Carmen Leal and Isabella Nocera 3C

Welcome to Level 3, Term 1, 2026!

Happy Holidays and we hope you enjoy the Easter break.

Literacy

In English this week, Grade 3 students have been exploring the mentor text Frank’s Red Hat by Sean E. Avery. Through this engaging story, students are learning how stories can communicate important themes and messages, particularly the theme of belonging.

Students began by building background knowledge to help them understand the context of the text. We discussed how narratives can share similar themes and how stories help us understand our own and others’ points of view. As the week progressed, students explored how the author shows Frank’s feelings about belonging through the characters’ actions and dialogue.

Using the theme of belonging, students created short conversations with friends to show their own points of view. They then practised using speech bubbles to represent different characters’ thoughts and feelings, helping them understand how dialogue shows perspective in a story.

By the end of the week, students were able to:

  • describe how the author shows a sense of belonging
  • share their own point of view through conversations
  • use speech bubbles to show different characters’ viewpoints

This learning helps students make meaningful connections between texts and their own lives, building empathy, confidence, and a sense of belonging within our classroom community.
