Hello Level 1 families.
It's hard to believe that Term 1 is over. It has flown by, and the students have done a fantastic job with Level 1 routines and expectations. We are blown away by how hard they have all worked. They will most definitely be ready for a good rest.
We wish you all a great two week break and look forward to hearing all about what the children got up to over the holidays. Safe travels if you are going away.
Take home books will continue to be changed on Tuesdays and Fridays next term.
Teeth on Wheels will now be visiting on Monday 27th April. Parents should have registered their child.
Enjoy a homework free break. You may use this 2 weeks as an opportunity to review any previous homework tasks and to get out and about in nature. Some ideas are journaling, writing postcards to friends/family, borrowing some readers from your local library, sharing stories together and going on nature hunts.

We have worked so hard in Literacy this term and have studied fantastic mentor texts. Some of the key skills we have focused on have been inferring, predicting, descriptive language (adjectives, powerful verbs, adverbs), punctuation and mirroring the author's writing style.
We look forward to more mentor text work in Term 2.

In Week 1, our text will be ANZAC Biscuitsby Phil Cummings and Owen Swan as part of our work in commemorating ANZAC Day. Students will be inferring, sequencing and using text specific vocabulary to create sentences. As always, we will be ensuring we are writing complete sentences with capital letters and ending punctuation as well as using description to uplevel our writing.
Our daily Core Literacy lessons include many English components including handwriting, dictation, card deck, making words with letters and their sounds, reading words and texts and comprehension.
It is also a time when we incorporate the student text book, Spelling Mastery, twice a week into our lessons to revise sounds, letter names, spelling rules and the reading and spelling of words.
Here's what we will be focusing on at the beginning of Term 2:
Week 1: Heart Words - please, those
Morphology - when s makes the 'z' sound

Week 2: Heart Words - today, world, because
Morphology - open syllables

It has been a big term of learning in Mathematics. We have reviewed concepts that students learned in Foundation, as well as introducing new concepts such as split strategy for addition and subtraction. A big focus for us next term is launching our fluency program. Students have been practising generating numbers quickly and quietly and have been doing a fabulous job. We can't wait to see the amazing progress that they make with their number accuracy and fluency.
In week 1, students will be looking at multiplicative thinking (groups of and sharing) to embed the concepts of multiplication and division.
Throughout the term, there has been lots of excitement in Science and we are sure you have heard all about it at home! Students have been learning about the forces of push and pull with Wilko and Ms Cullen, and it has been wonderful to see their curiosity and enthusiasm grow. One of the highlights was building a “box castle” together and then testing our understanding by knocking it down using mini beanbags. The students loved predicting what might happen and then seeing it in action. Here are some photos of the fun learning that has been happening in our Science sessions this term!

As we come to the end of Term 1, our students have thoroughly enjoyed exploring our enquiry topic, Families Now and Then. Throughout the term, we have been learning about how families, schools and homes have changed over time, and how some traditions remain just as special today.
As part of this learning, students completed a project in class where they created a poster showing their own family and a special tradition they celebrate each year. It was wonderful to see the pride students took in sharing something meaningful about their home life, whether it was a birthday tradition, a holiday celebration or a weekly family activity.
The students have been highly engaged, curious and eager to contribute their ideas during discussions. They especially loved sharing stories about their own families and learning about the similarities and differences between each other. It has been a lovely way to finish the term!

Next term, our Inquiry unit will be Geography. Students will begin with studying maps of Australia and naming the states and capitals, as well as some famous rivers and oceans. They will then learn about other continents around the world.
Warm Regards,
The Level 1 Team
