Year 3 Maths

Year 3 Maths – Additive Strategies
In Year 3 we have been learning about how to solve addition and subtraction problems using a range of additive strategies. While our students demonstrated strong ability in solving challenging maths problems using a pencil and paper, this unit has helped them develop quick mental strategies. This has allowed them to solve maths problems with speed and accuracy.
During the sequence, students have worked towards being able to identify, demonstrate and explain how to use the split, jump and compensation strategies. They are now justifying why they have used a particular strategy for each problem, showcasing their reasoning skills.
Our learning goals throughout this unit have been:
- Properties of odd and even numbers in additive situations.
- Using place value to partition and add numbers.
- A range of strategies for addition (split, jump and compensation).
- A range of strategies for subtraction (jump, compensation and count forwards to find the difference).
We are proud of the work the students have done in Year 3.
