Expect Respect Program
at Mackellar
This term, our school will be delivering the Expect Respect program to all students from Prep to Grade 6. The program is based on resources and guidance from the Department of Education and Training (DET) Bully Stoppers website, and supports students to build safe, respectful relationships and understand how to respond to bullying behaviours in positive and constructive ways.
Through age-appropriate lessons and discussions, students will learn about:
-Respectful behaviour and relationships
-Recognising bullying and its impact
-Safe strategies for seeking help and supporting others
-Building a positive and inclusive school community
Teachers are looking forward to working with students throughout the term to strengthen a culture of respect and wellbeing across our school.
Teachers will be assigning tasks on the homework matrix related to Expect Respect and the four key strategies: Stop Routine, Stopping Routine, Upstander Routine and Getting Help Routine from Adults.
Last week, the Grade 3–5 JSC representatives held their first meeting in the SEL room, joined by the Grade 6 student leaders. They worked with Mrs Wood to prepare to facilitate the first Expect Respect lesson to all grades, following Monday’s assembly.
In small groups, students created and practised short role plays to perform for other year levels. This gave the Grade 3–5 representatives a valuable first taste of leadership, with many more opportunities to come throughout the year.
