What's Happening In Grade 4?

We have had a busy and exciting start to Term 2!

Reading

We will begin the term learning about Information Reports which will complement our Inquiry topic of Geography.  Students will be writing information reports on animals, countries, and many other areas.

The Grade 4 students are excited to begin exploring the classic Australian novel Storm Boy by Colin Thiele.  Through this much loved story, students will learn about the unique Coorong environment and learn about the importance of caring for our natural world. The novel will provide a wonderful opportunity to discuss themes such as environmental conservation, wildlife protection and the need to preserve fragile environments. The novel will align well with our Inquiry topic of Geography this term.  We look forward to engaging students in thoughtful discussions and meaningful learning as they connect with this iconic text.

Writing:

This term, students will be learning about the structure and features of information reports, including how to organise facts using clear headings, introductions, and supporting details. This work links closely with our Geography studies and our class novel Storm Boy, as students explore the unique features of the Coorong environment and the wildlife that lives there.

During the second part of the term, students will be exploring narrative texts and learning about their key structure, including the orientation, complication, and resolution. They will discover how authors introduce characters and settings, build tension through problems or challenges, and bring stories to a satisfying conclusion. Using Storm Boy as a mentor text, students will examine how these elements are used to engage readers and convey meaningful themes. They will then apply this understanding in their own writing, creating imaginative and well-structured narratives that demonstrate their growing confidence as storytellers.

Mathematics

Students will continue to practise and learn timestable facts so that they become automatic responses.  They will apply their place value knowledge to develop efficient mental strategies for solving addition and subtraction problems.  These skills will then be applied to solve measurement based problems.  Students will be using measuring tools such as rulers, measuring tapes to accurately measure in metres, centimetres and millimetres. Following on from this, the Grade 4 students will be learning about angles and using the correct terminology to identify the types of angles such as acute, obtuse and right angles.

Inquiry: Geography

This term, students will be learning about the global concepts of Interconnectedness and sustainability.  Students will be supported to explore and understand the world around them,  both locally and globally and will investigate different types of places and environments, as well as their climates and vegetation, and how these differ across the world.  Students will begin by unpacking key vocabulary within the geography achievement standard to deepen their understanding of what they are expected to learn and how progress will be recognised. Additionally, an upcoming excursion is being  planned to CERES Community Environment Park which will be used to spark student curiosity and build foundational knowledge for the term ahead.  This real world learning experience will help students make meaningful connections between what they see in their environment and the key concepts we will be exploring in class.
