Grade 3 & 4
Term 2, Week 2
Welcome back to all our Year 3/4 students! We’re excited to begin what is shaping up to be a busy and engaging term, filled with rich learning experiences across all areas of the curriculum.
This term in Reading, students will build their comprehension skills by asking questions before, during and after reading. Using mentor texts such as Lest We Forget, students will explore strategies like making text-to-self connections, comparing characters and identifying key ideas. There will also be a strong focus on vocabulary development, where students will learn to infer the meaning of unfamiliar words using context clues. Students will continue to develop their thinking through sticky note responses, discussions and independent reading.
In Writing, students will explore the writing process in depth, focusing on generating and developing ideas. Using the “seed” concept from mentor texts, students will unpack ideas through surface, below surface and deep thinking. They will experiment with a range of text types including narratives, persuasive pieces and historical recounts, particularly around themes such as remembrance and celebrations. Students will also strengthen their editing and revising skills using a variety of strategies, before publishing their final pieces.
In Maths, students will explore key areas including measurement (time), multiplicative thinking, probability, fractions and space. Alongside learning these concepts, there will be a strong emphasis on why these skills matter. Understanding time helps students manage daily routines and develop independence. Multiplicative thinking supports problem-solving and is essential for real-world tasks such as sharing, grouping and understanding patterns. Learning about fractions builds foundational skills for measuring, cooking and interpreting data, while probability encourages students to think critically about chance and outcomes. Across all topics, students will be developing their reasoning, accuracy and confidence - skills that are essential not only in mathematics, but in everyday life.
Our Inquiry unit will explore the difference between celebrations and commemorations. Students will investigate Australian celebrations, Indigenous celebrations and celebrations from around the world. This learning is important in helping students develop respect, empathy and a broader understanding of different cultures and traditions. By exploring how and why people celebrate, students begin to recognise both similarities and differences across communities, fostering a sense of global awareness. This unit will encourage curiosity, critical thinking and meaningful discussions, leading into a class Celebrations Expo where students can share their learning.
Please ensure your child is reading regularly throughout the week and recording this in their diary, with a parent or guardian signature. Diaries are checked each week. Consistent reading is essential for developing fluency, comprehension and confidence. It also exposes students to new vocabulary and language patterns, which supports spelling and writing. Regular reading plays a key role in your child’s overall learning and success across all areas of the curriculum.
We are looking forward to a great term of learning and growth. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your child’s teacher.
Warm Regards,
The 3/4 Team
