Ms Maria Denholm

Youth Leadership Academy Australia - Primary Dream and Lead Conference

On Tuesday 12 March, the Primary Years Ambassadors and House Sports and Arts Leaders attended the YLAA Conference at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre.

The following reflections were shared by some of the students.

Mrs Maria Denholm

Head of Primary Years

My name is Lara Boothby, Sport Leaders for Chirnside and I’m going to tell you about the YLAA Conference. Being a House Sport Leader has lots of requirements and responsibilities and I went to the city to learn about leadership.  What do you know about leadership? What do you think leadership is?  A leader, for me, is a good kind person who takes responsibility for themselves and others. A leader is also someone who does the right thing even if no one is looking.

One person who is a great leader and came to the conference to talk about leadership was Wil Massara.  “Your age does not determine your ability to achieve extraordinary things.” These were Wil’s words that inspired me. It does not matter how young or old you are, you can make a change.  When Wil was very young, he became a great leader in his community.

As leaders we have different ways to lead; you can lead from the front so people can see you and listen.  You can lead a team and take responsibility for them. Finally, you can lead from behind the scenes and be the structure of the build.

Another thing you can remember about leadership is you can use mean words others have said to you and use them as motivation.  To be a good leader you have to believe in yourself and know you are good enough. What I like to remember is to take the chance, take every chance you get because it can take you into a place you may love and enjoy. Remember, you can make a change!

Lara Boothby

Primary Sports Leader

On Tuesday 12 March, the Primary Ambassadors and House Sports and Arts leaders went to the Melbourne Exhibition Centre.  We went with Mrs Denholm to learn about what makes a good leader.  We learnt about taking the chance for something good that will help you in your life. Later on, Wil Massara (the CEO of YLAA) came and told us a quote, “My age does not determine my ability to achieve extraordinary things”. It means that even if you’re young, it doesn’t mean you cannot do something.

Year 6 Canberra Tour

The Year 6 students went on their Canberra Tour at the end of February. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians visiting the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist with the cost of this the Government contributes $45 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate (PACER). The rebate is paid directly to the College upon the completion of the Tour. The students were able to reflect on their experiences. This Newsletter article contains two of these reflections, the rest of the students can share their writing with their parents through Seesaw:
