From The Team

It has been a wonderful start to Term 2 in Year 1/2. We hope everyone had a relaxing break over the holidays with your family and friends. It has certainly been a busy first two weeks back at school, especially with the swimming program, which has been very exciting for the students. It’s great to have the opportunity to learn and practise essential swimming and water safety skills.

A gentle reminder that your child should be bringing home their Communication Folder with 5 readers, their Reading Log and words folder. We ask that these folders are returned to school each day in case we have notices to send home. Readers will only be changed on a Monday, and Reading Logs will also be checked then. Please fill out your child’s Reading Log each night that they read over the week.

During Integrated Studies this term, we are learning about habitats. To support this unit, we are going on an excursion to Healesville Sanctuary on Friday 31st May, 2024.  Permission and payment for this is now available on Compass.

What We Are Learning In Specialist Classes              In Term 2

Visual Arts

This term students will create animal art to further develop their collage, drawing and colouring skills. They will follow guided drawings to create the shape of different creatures, and will experiment with crayon resist and blended watercolours. Students will also explore 'in front of' and 'behind' to show depth in their art and further develop their cutting and drawing fine-motor skills.

We will be using dyes, watercolours and oil pastels this term, so students must bring an art smock to school to protect their school uniform. Smocks can be bought or made from an old, oversized top. The smocks must be clearly named and will be kept in a classroom tub for the children to wear when using messy art materials.

Mandarin

Year 1/2 students will continue their exploration of numbers by learning to read and write two-digit numbers in Chinese. Additionally, they will delve into the concepts of telling time and understanding dates. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in fun activities related to the Dragon Boat Festival. These activities will further enrich their understanding of Chinese culture.

Science

In Term 2, Year 1/2 students will be learning about physical science, in particular looking at light and sound - how they are produced and how they and can be sensed.

Performing Arts

In Performing Arts lessons this term, students will be rehearsing and performing multiple parts on the xylophone (bass and melody), responding to and replicating rhythmic patterns using 4/4 timing, singing and playing the major scale using classroom instruments, and developing their skills within a musical ensemble.

Physical Education

In Physical Education this term, the Year 1 and 2 students will be focusing on a variety of Fundamental Motor skills. They will be practising moving in different ways and directions using locomotor movements such as hopping, skipping, galloping, running and jumping. Later in the term the students will be practising object control skills and will be learning the correct technique for catching objects, underarm throws and overarm throws.

Swimming Program

Students have loved participating in the swimming program at Knox Leisureworks over the past 2 weeks.

Term 2 Integrated Studies - Animal Habitats

We had a lot of fun starting off our habitats unit making posters for different habitats.
