Grade 3 Scratch & Patch

The Grade 3 students have taken on the Scratch and Patch program this term. So far, we have learnt about sustainable practices and how to properly look after chickens. Last week, after mending the fence and cleaning up the chicken coop, we were finally able to bring in 4 new chickens! The chickens have settled in well into their new home.

Across the year, each Grade 3 class will have their turn to look after the chickens. This involves feeding them grain and food scraps each day, changing their water, checking for eggs and taking on the ‘Chicken Monitor’ role. The chicken monitors will be in the coop at lunch times every Monday to Thursday (from Term 2). They will help remind students of how to look after the chickens and the rules that need to be followed when in the chicken coop.

We will also be running a competition for all classes in Grades P-2, 5 and 6 in the first week back in Term 2. This involves putting the correct scraps for the chickens in their class buckets. Two students from Grade 3 will come around each afternoon to check off each class and make sure they have the correct scraps. The top 4 classrooms that have the correct buckets across the week will get to name one of the chickens!

Stay tuned for more chicken updates!
