In Prep, the children have been learning about sounds, letters and words through 'discovery learning' each morning. This play-based learning helps students transition from kinder to school and provides intentional opportunities for developing their oral language skills while they enjoy learning with each other through structured play. Students are involved in literacy activities which develop their phonological awareness, phonemic skills and word recognition. This is an important part of the process in teaching students to read and write.
Guided Reading offers an opportunity for explicit teaching, where the teacher teaches students at their point of need in small groups. Teachers use an instructional levelled text with students and they focus on a specific learning intention. The teacher models a reading skill or strategy and the students have the opportunity to practise this with the teacher, and then independently, in a supportive learning environment. We call this the "I do, we do, you do" gradual release approach to explicit teaching.
This week our Year 1/2 students went on a community walk related to their Inquiry Unit "Community - Places and Spaces". The children have been learning about their local community. They were very excited to walk past and visit local landmarks and places of interest that they had viewed on a map of Richmond prior to their walk. They were welcomed by Fr Trung and Ms Marchese at St Ignatius Church and they had a play at Citizens Park.
Student Reflections:
Alicia 1/2DG
I enjoyed visiting St Ignatius Church because that's where my Mum and Dad got married.
Amelia 1/2DG
My favourite part of the community walk was visiting St Ignatius Church because we got to walk around and see the statues and I prayed for my family to God and Mary.
Phoebe 1/2DG
I liked it when we went to St Ignatius because we got to see the statues which were pretty beautiful and I got to pray in my head.
Liv 1/2DG
When we were walking to the church I loved how we saw different buildings. It was very beautiful and it made me feel like I could do anything.
Lucas 1/2DG
On the community walk we saw the grocery stores, McDonald's and the church. I liked seeing the statues of Jesus and Mary behind the church. It was beautiful and sad because Mary was holding Jesus when he died.
Akur 1/2DG
I liked it when Fr Trung and Ms Marchese gave us the lollypops after we visited the church. I also liked it when we walked past McDonald's because the chips smelt so good. And I loved playing with my friends at Citizens Park.
Archie 1/2DG
On our community walk we saw the police station. We saw some white and blue police cars and Isaw some people inside the police station. We also walked past my house!
If at any time you would like to chat about the learning at Trinity, or you have any questions or concerns about your child's learning, please do not hesitate to see your child's teacher, or myself.
I wish you all a happy and holy Easter break and look forward to seeing you again after the holidays.
