Library News

Dear Parents and Families,
As we wrap up another bustling term, we’re excited to share some wonderful updates from our library. It has been a fantastic few months filled with stories, adventures, and a whole lot of reading! We are absolutely amazed at the sheer number of books being borrowed and the wide variety of interests our students are exploring. So far this year, an impressive 20,170 books have found new homes in the hands of our eager young readers! A special shout out goes to Year 4, which leads the pack with an astonishing 4,112 books borrowed—way to go, Year 4!
Our youngest bookworms, the kindergarteners, are off to a fantastic start too, having borrowed 1,809 books this year. This is particularly remarkable given their original cap of just one book a week! It’s heart-warming to see their enthusiasm for reading blossom. Additionally, Sea 4 has shone brightly as the most borrowed class, with 820 books checked out this year. We couldn’t be prouder of all our students for their dedication and love for literature!
At the heart of our library lies a collection that truly caters to all tastes. With over 15,000 physical books available, our library boasts a rich mix of resources, with 66% fiction and 34% non-fiction. This diverse range ensures that every child can find something that piques their interest! Plus, for those digital adventurers, 27% of our resources are available online! All of these fantastic titles can be easily accessed through the students’ portal, both during term and the upcoming holidays. So whether your child is curled up with a classic novel, exploring the wonders of science, or diving into an exciting e-book, there's something for everyone.
As we look ahead, we’re beyond excited for Book Week in Term 3! This year’s theme, “Book an Adventure!”, promises to be a thrilling celebration of reading and creativity. Mark your calendars for Wednesday, August 6th, when we’ll host our spectacular Book Parade! Students will have the chance to dress up as their favourite literary characters, showcasing their creativity and passion for reading. We can’t wait to see all the imaginative costumes and the joy they bring! More details will be shared in Term 3, so stay tuned for announcements.
In addition to the parade, we are thrilled to announce that we’ll be welcoming three amazing authors to speak with our students during Book Week festivities. Get ready to be inspired by Gus Gordon, a talented illustrator and writer known for over 70 books, including the beloved “Herman and Rosie,” which won the 2013 CBCA Honour Award. Gus will share his experiences and insights into the world of storytelling and illustration, sparking imagination in our young readers.
We’re also excited to host Reece Carter, whose whimsical tales, like “A Girl Called Corpse,” have captivated young readers. Reece's stories are filled with magic and a touch of weirdness, drawing from his own adventures growing up in rural Western Australia. Lastly, we have Lian Tanner, the acclaimed author of the Keepers Trilogy, who has won two Aurealis Awards for Best Australian Children's Fantasy. Lian’s books have been translated into eleven languages, illustrating just how universal the love for her stories is!
Don’t forget to check out the annual book shortlist released by The Children’s Book Council of Australia, which can be found here. It’s an excellent opportunity for families to discover new reads and engage in conversations about literature at home.
We are so proud of our students and their hard work in embracing the joy of reading. Thank you for your continued support in fostering a love for books both at school and at home. Here’s to more adventures in reading, both in the library and beyond!
Happy reading!
