5/6 Classroom News

5/6 News

In just these two weeks, we’ve completed our mid-year assessments, unleashed our creativity in preparation for our upcoming Inquiry showcase, baked over 300 cupcakes to support Do It For Dolly Day, honed our skills at basketball clinics, taken part in both friendly and competitive sporting events, engaged in Hands on Learning, and even served lunch at Senior Citizens. It’s been a jam-packed ending to another fantastic term!

We hope you’ve enjoyed reading about all that’s been happening here just as much as our students have enjoyed sharing it with you, writing about their experiences each fortnight.

We wish all our families a safe, restful, and warm holiday break. We look forward to hearing about your adventures through the stories students bring back when we return on Monday, 21st July (just think Winter will be nearly 2/3 done then).

Winter Sports

Netball

Tuesday, 17th June, 5/6A and 5/6B went to Winter Sports. I played netball with a group of girls. I was on a team with Lana and Sienna. We all played 10 rounds and versed every team. There were 11 teams. I played shooter and center all day. My team lost 3 and won 7 rounds in total. It was so fun and easy. I was helping people who didn't know how to play netball and explaining to them how to play. At 12:05pm we had a lunch break for 45mins and the handball was right next to us.

Basketball

On Tuesday, we all went to Winter Sports at the Kyabram P-12 school. I played basketball alongside the other boys who had an untouchable love for basketball. It was so awesome. Owen and I were on a team together. Nugget and Lachie, Kane and Ricky, Xhander, Luca and Ollie, Nate and Aiden were all on other teams and we had to verse them. It was spitting rain in and out which made it cold and boring for a little while. There were some year 12s umpiring from St Aug's. They were very nice and cool but they didn't call anything in the game.

Soccer

Today, 17th of June, was our Winter Sports. I went with a group of girls and Spencer to play soccer. We brought lots of lollies, so many that we had to actually get another tub! After we ate a few lollies we got sorted into groups. There was plain blue, green and purple team. Kaylee Ada and I were in purple and after sorted we were ready to verse another team.

We were losing because some people in our group didn't even know how to play but after a while of losing, some boys from the other team switched places with the people who didn't know how to play and after that we tied 2-2, which for my team was a win.

After a break we versed the green team who had Scarlett, Annika and Spencer. They won most of there games, but we tied 1-1. It was a very intense game but also a very fun game. When we finished the game we had lunch. For Lunch we had more lollies (of course) and the food in our lunchboxes. After we ate, we went on the playground which was not crowded at all but after a while we had to play again.  We versed all the teams again. We won 1 and lost 2.

After all the games were over, we went to watch the basketball team. After they finished we went to the bus stop and all the girls who went to soccer got to sit at the back of the bus and then we picked up the people doing netball and handball before returning back to school.

European Handball

It was a beautiful day for Winter Sports. We went to play European handball. Me, Billy, Kayden and Spencer all tried to get the ball into the goals. Overall we won 5 games and lost 6. It was a little bit hard because you had to run 3 steps, dribble and then stand and pass it to someone. I made two friends, Max and Miles from Ky P-12 in Grade 6. It was a good day.

Do It For Dolly Day

Our Young Leaders and Grade 5/6 students once again made us very proud this week. Their efforts and enthusiasm while cooking 300 blue cupcakes to sell to students to raise money for Do It For Dolly Day wasinspirational. To say it was a mammoth task was an understatement. They worked alongside Brett, talking about what the day means, baking, decorating and cleaning over two huge days and the final products were enjoyed by all of the students and staff throughout the school.

A big shout out to Brett who always makes things happen. We are very lucky to have you with us in Grades 5/6 .

Hands On Learning

On Monday 16th June, we had hands on learning with Brett. We all had a turn at riding the ride-on lawnmower. Then we hooked up the trailer and we had to control it and turn it through two cones with the trailer on. We had to turn a lot wider to fit through the cones without running them over. Then we scooped the bark chips into the wheelbarrows and tipped them into the big trailer. We had hot roast beef and gravy buns for lunch. It was very messy, chewy and yummy. We made a mini fire next to the big fire by lighting sticks in the big fire and using them to light the little fire. We experimented with using green leaves and sticks to see what worked well. Our day was amazing.

Thursday, 19th June, Hands on Learning was only Kayden and I. First Josh led us through the basics like no in front of the rocks at the fire and that stuff. Josh then led us through what we would be doing for the next 10 weeks, like fixing a lawn mower and fixing up old vintage pedal carts. We could choose. We could start on the pedal carts or we could start on the mower. We ended up choosing the pedal cart. Kayden and I both decided to choose the rusty one to give us a little challenge and see how far we could get with it. We took the wheels off then started fixing up the dents in it and making it nice and smooth. We then took the chassis off so Josh could take it home and straighten it up. For lunch Aiden cooked sausages on the camp fire and they were awesome. Finally we packed up for the day and raked up some wood chips.

On Monday, the 23rd of June, Brett's Hands on Learning group Ava, Imi Scarlett and Anika started the day around the fire Brett had started. The day was cold, windy and rainy and this continued for the rest of the day. We had a quick chat about our weekends and how we were doing. Then we asked Brett what we were planning to do. Brett said, "Driving the ride on mower and moving another  6 metres of bark chips!"

We set off to get the ride on mower out of the shed, on the way back we all had a go at a skills test. Everyone passed their driving test, although Anika did bump into the footy post,(you may have felt a small earthquake where you were at the time), but she ended up passing. After we quickly destroyed the massive 6 square meters of bark chips and all having a go at the ride on mower, Ava and Imi cooked schnitzels and salad rolls with bacon, cheese and lettuce as well. Then we put the ride on mower back, grabbed our bags and went back to class. What an awesome day! Thank you Brett.

Campaspe Boys Football

On Tuesday the 24th of June, the boys, and Tippi, set off to play footy. It started out cold but as the day progressed it got better. We won the first game, second, and third and lost the fourth. On the fourth we lost by a point. All the boys thought it was rigged and we disliked the umpire's decisions but we held it in to show good sportsmanship. In the middle of the fifth game it started to rain which didn't help our plight. It was a brutal day. In the end we went home disappointed because of a decision made by the goal umpire but still it was fun. We played some good games, had a few wins and some loses. The wind mucked us up a lot. A big shout out to Tippi for the resilience she showed all day and to Mr Hogan and Brayden for coaching us.
