Support Unit

At Chisholm this term, we've been busy with a range of fun and engaging learning activities!
One day, we were learning to measure area using manipulatives; the next, we were building a 3D city using nets—working in pairs to design hospitals, libraries, and other buildings. In Maths, there are often opportunities for friendly classroom competitions to see who can solve problems the fastest or most accurately bringing out the best in everyone! We’ve also been exploring the scientific method by investigating questions and recording our observations like real scientists. Some days, the library comes to us, supporting our reading by helping us develop new comprehension strategies. On other days, we visit the library to dive into books and enjoy quiet reading time. There’s always something exciting happening at Chisholm—never a dull moment!
Our Year 7 Support Unit students enjoyed a community access excursion to Curry Reserve Playground. As part of their Community Access Program, students participated in fun activities using the playground equipment while developing important life skills such as road safety awareness, following directions, social interaction, and appropriate public behaviour. It was a wonderful opportunity for students to practise independence and enjoy time outdoors with their peers, teachers and SLSOs.
The Year 7 Support Unit cohort recently enjoyed a visit to the Elderslie Home Store as part of their Work Education program. This excursion was a valuable part of their Life Skills studies, helping to prepare them for real-world experiences. During the outing, students practised selecting items from a menu, interacting politely with staff to place their orders, and waiting patiently for their food. They then shared a meal with their classmates, enjoying both the food and each other’s company. The students were supported by their teachers and SLSO's throughout the trip and had a fantastic time on this mini excursion.
