Year Three

Spotlight on Learning

Year 3 Spotlighting on Learning.

Sunday marked the beginning of the Church season of Pentecost. It was a joy to see the Ephesus community come together in celebration, showcasing the beautiful diversity of our many cultures.

As we welcome the winter season, the weather has certainly turned cooler. We kindly remind families to ensure children come to school with weather-appropriate clothing, including jumpers and jackets, to keep warm throughout the day. Please ensure all uniform items are clearly labelled with your child's name.

We have been learning about the Sign of the Cross and the meaning behind it. We have been focusing on understanding the Trinity—that God is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—and how this belief is central to our Catholic faith.

Maths

In Maths this week, our Year 3 students have been learning how to collect and organise data to answer real-world questions. We’ve explored different types of data – categorical and discrete numerical – and learnt how to identify and explain the difference between them.

Students have had fun designing their own survey questions, collecting data from their classmates, and displaying their findings using frequency tables, bar graphs, and picture graphs. They’ve been developing the important skill of interpreting data and using graphs to explain what the information tells us.

It’s been exciting to see their confidence grow as they use maths to explore the world around them in meaningful ways!

English

We are working on writing book reports to develop their summarising and writing skills. Recently, we have been focusing on the story Finding Our Heart. Students are learning to write a summary paragraph that includes a clear topic sentence introducing the main idea, supporting details that explain important parts of the story and a concluding sentence that wraps up their summary. This structure helps students organise their ideas clearly and practice writing complete paragraphs.

Integrated Studies

We have been learning about global celebrations and their cultural and historical significance. We recently explored Holi, the Hindu festival of colour, and Eid al-Fitr, an important Islamic celebration marking the end of Ramadan. Students learned how Holi celebrates the arrival of spring and the triumph of good over evil, while Eid focuses on gratitude, generosity, and community. Through videos, stories, and class discussions, students are developing respect and understanding for the diverse ways people around the world come together to celebrate their beliefs and traditions.

AUSLAN

In AUSLAN we are developing important signing skills to communicate clearly and respectfully. They are learning to look at a person, rather than just signing “YOU,” when giving instructions, follow instructions by noticing where the action sign moves within the signing space and to use pointing to refer to people and objects while signing.

Social/Emotional Learning & RRRR

This week, Year 3 students revisited the important concept of trusted adults as part of our Social and Emotional Learning program. Trusted adults are people we can go to when we feel unsafe, worried, or need help. Students discussed who their trusted adults are at home, at school, and in the community.
