Dear Families,
Pentecost and Multicultural Day Celebration
This week our school came alive with colour and joy as we celebrated Pentecost alongside Multicultural Day. Students embraced the spirit of unity and diversity by wearing traditional clothing that reflected their cultural backgrounds. The highlight of the day was a vibrant parade, where each student proudly showcased their heritage. It was a wonderful way to honour the message of Pentecost, the coming of the Holy Spirit bringing people of all nations together, while also celebrating the rich cultural diversity within our school community.
Congratulations to this week's award winners! Keep up the amazing work!
Religious Education Focus:
As part of their Confirmation journey, explored the vital role of the Holy Spirit in the mission of the Church. They learnt how the Spirit empowers individuals to live out their faith and share the message of Jesus with others. Through reflection on Pentecost, a significant feast in the Church, students recognised how the Holy Spirit first came to the disciples, giving them the courage and strength to proclaim the Good News. This learning deepened their appreciation of the Spirit's presence in their own lives as they prepare to be confirmed and continue the mission of Jesus in the world today.
English Focus:
Reading:
This week, our students focused on learning about simple and compound sentences. They discovered that a simple sentence contains one independent clause, while a compound sentence joins two independent clauses using a coordinating conjunction. Students explored how coordinating conjunctions, such as for, and, nor, but, or, yet, and so connect words, phrases, and clauses that are equal in structure. Through writing practice, students gained confidence in using these sentence types to make their writing more engaging and effective. Students continued our exploration of the novel Us Mob Walawurru.
Writing:
This week, students engaged with selected pages from the novel Us Mob Walawuru to develop their comprehension and analytical skills. They worked on understanding and summarising an excerpt by identifying key information using the 5 W’s, Who, What, When, Where, and Why. Students explored the attributes of the main character, examining their thoughts, actions, and relationships, and recorded their findings in a character analysis template. Through this activity, they gained a deeper understanding of the story and its characters while building important skills in summarising and critical thinking.
Mathematics Focus:
This week, students have been learning the effects of increasing the number of trials in chance experiments. By comparing actual results to the expected values, they learnt how chance and probability work in real situations and how patterns become clearer with more trials.
Integrated Studies Focus
This week, our students have been immersed in an exciting historical inquiry as they work collaboratively to research one of Australia's original colonies. In small groups, they are exploring the development of their chosen colony by investigating key events, significant people, and important historical themes. Using both primary and secondary sources, students are building timelines that capture the rich history of each colony. They are challenged to present their findings in a creative and engaging format, showcasing their teamwork and research skills. This hands-on project is helping students deepen their understanding of Australia's colonial past while building essential collaboration and communication skills.
Social & Emotional Learning Focus
Students have been learning to recognise what types of problems they can solve on their own, and when they might need help from someone else. They learnt who they can go to for support—such as teachers, friends, or family—and how to ask for help in a respectful and clear way.
Auslan Learning Focus
This week, students worked towards understanding that signed languages use a variety of visual features. These include handshapes to show the size and shape of objects, facial expressions to show emotions, and body movements to show how characters act or move.
Kind regards,
The Year 6 Team
