GRC High School Experience Program

On Monday week 9, our Year 5 students arrived at Peakhurst GRC High School filled with anticipation. We were warmly welcomed by Ms Willis, the Primary Links Coordinator, who introduced us to the day's activities. The students were divided into three groups, each eager to explore the high school environment. Throughout the morning, every group participated in two different high school classes, engaging in hands on learning experiences that allowed them to glimpse what their future education would be like. The day was not only informative but also inspiring, as the Year 5 students interacted with high school teachers and some helpful high school students, all while gaining valuable insights into the transition to high school.

During the experience day at Peakhurst GRC High School, two of the groups had the opportunity to attend an English class focused on persuasive writing. The lesson was an engaging exploration of techniques to use in persuasive writing. The GRC teacher, Mr Kikilas and Ms Shing were impressed by our PPS students' strong grasp of high modality and emotive language, showcasing their understanding of how to effectively persuade an audience. Additionally, the students demonstrated their knowledge of various figurative language techniques.

Two groups had a wonderful time during a fun and interactive Science lesson, where they safely practiced lighting matches and using a Bunsen burner. Under the guidance of the enthusiastic Science teacher, they learned about the various temperatures that the burner can achieve, gaining hands on experience in laboratory safety and procedures. The highlight of the lesson was when the teacher demonstrated the incredible heat of the Bunsen burner by burning magnesium, showcasing the spectacular reaction that is caused. This captivating demonstration not only deepened the students' understanding of chemical reactions but also ignited their curiosity and passion for Science, making it a memorable part of their experience day.

The Japanese lesson was both engaging and memorable, leaving a lasting impression on our Year 5 students. Sensei captivated the class with his dynamic teaching style, introducing essential vocabulary that students would need in a high school Japanese classroom. As they enthusiastically learned to count from 1 to 10, both forwards and backwards, the atmosphere was filled with excitement and laughter. The students had the opportunity to make a Japanese Origami hat that could cleverly transform into a fish. It was an enjoyable and enriching experience that highlighted the beauty of the Japanese culture.

We concluded the morning with a fun walk back to school. Overall, the experience proved to be an invaluable opportunity for our Year 5 students to engage with the high school environment. This enriching morning not only built their knowledge but also strengthened their confidence, leaving them eager to embrace their future educational journey.
