In English, our Foundation students have been busy exploring the differences between information books and storybooks. We’ve been unpacking the structure of information texts, noticing how they often include headings, facts, and labelled diagrams. Books about frogs, insects, and cranes have captured our interest and inspired our writing.

The children have enjoyed writing sentences that include real facts about these creatures, linking beautifully with our Inquiry unit on animal features. It's been wonderful to see their growing understanding of how living things can be grouped by their characteristics.

Thank you for continuing to support home reading – it's fantastic to see so many children reading each night and building their confidence.

We’re all looking forward to celebrating our school’s 160 years of education next week – it promises to be a very special event!

Year 1 & 2A

Year 1/2A have been busy exploring, investigating, and learning together!

In Maths, we’ve been learning all about 2D shapes and 3D objects. Through hands-on activities, students have enjoyed building, sorting, and describing different shapes using real-world language.

During Inquiry, we’ve been researching living things and their needs. Students used their findings to create their own information reports, proudly sharing facts about animals and the things they need to survive and thrive to the 1/2 student group!

In Literacy, we’ve been exploring the structure of stories — focusing on the beginning, middle, and end — and making connections with texts we’ve read. A highlight has been using hand puppets to retell well-known fairy tales. The students had lots of fun bringing characters to life while building confidence in speaking and storytelling.

We’ve also been learning new maths games that help build our memory and encourage us to work cooperatively with others. These games are a fun way to practise important skills while strengthening classroom friendships.

We’re looking forward to celebrating 160 years of education in Wedderburn next week — what a wonderful milestone!

Have a safe and relaxing term break. We can’t wait for another jam-packed and exciting Term 3 ahead!

Year 3/4A

We are now close to the finish line for semester one! We have had such a busy, yet productive start to the year in 3/4A. Students have worked very hard, and we are so proud of their efforts, they deserve a well-rested break!

Since the end of term is near, we are starting to get a little tired, so maintaining positive and respectful relationships is important to help us all get through! Next week are our 160 years celebrations, there will be many events to fully recognise this magnificent achievement.

We are also very close to the opening of our new area outside the 3/4 classrooms, below is the almost finished process!

Thank you to all families for your support throughout the semester, we hope you have a fantastic break.

Year 3/4B

We're nearly at the end of Term 2 and there's been lots of exciting things happening!

In English, we have wrapped up our information reports and are working on expanding our sentences by adding more detail to our writing so as to make it more interesting.

In Maths, we are revisiting how to do vertical addition and subtraction.

In Inquiry, we have been exploring civics and citizenship, looking at laws, different levels of government and where we belong.

Our reading marathon minutes are coming along nicely. Great job to everyone who is reading at home every night!

Just outside our classroom, the new play area, Steel Stadium and basketball/netball courts are coming along nicely and nearly ready to use!

Next week is our last week of term 2 and the 160th year of Education in Wedderburn celebrations, which we are all looking forward to.

Farewell and Best Wishes to Miss Eilish
Farewell and Best Wishes to Miss Eilish

Wow, we are halfway through the year and have had some amazing learning opportunities! We have been to camp, to sporting events, productions and shown our learning digitally and through hands-on activities. We have continued to have our daily superstar, it is awesome to see a range of people picked throughout the semester - our superstar tree is looking lush.

As it is my last newsletter, I wanted to say a big thank you to the 5/6 class and the whole Wedderburn College community, I have had a blast here at Wedderburn College.

Year 10 Holocaust Museum Excursion

Well done to our Year 10 students on a fantastic Term 2! On Friday 13 June, students visited the Melbourne Holocaust Museum for a powerful and eye-opening learning experience. It was a big day, involving train travel to Southern Cross and metro services to Elsternwick, and our students represented the college with punctuality, respect, and maturity throughout.

At the museum, students had the incredible opportunity to hear from Holocaust survivor Guta Goldstein, who shared her moving personal story of survival in Łódź, Poland. Students listened attentively and asked thoughtful, reflective questions. They then participated in a guided tour of the museum and a hands-on primary source workshop, engaging with high-quality replicas of Holocaust artefacts, including Jewish armbands, Nazi propaganda, and historic documents.

Before returning home, students enjoyed some well-earned free time at Southern Cross. Our guide Melanie praised the group, commenting on their excellent behaviour and engagement, and warmly invited us back anytime. It was a meaningful end to a strong term of Humanities learning.

We wish all our Year 10s a safe and happy holiday!

Another Term Wrapped Up!

Exams are done and dusted, and our students can be proud of their efforts over what has been a busy few weeks. Those studying a Unit 3 & 4 subject also sat the GAT—a big milestone and a great experience in preparation for future assessments.

There’s a real buzz around the school as we get closer to moving into our brand-new learning spaces. The new facilities are looking fantastic, and we can’t wait to see the opportunities they’ll bring. We’re also gearing up for a week of very special events—160 Years of Education in Wedderburn— preparations are well underway to celebrate this remarkable milestone.

A huge thank you to all our teachers for their support, guidance and encouragement throughout the semester. Their efforts have helped make a big difference to our students' learning and wellbeing.

Our End of Semester Reports will be released shortly, and we encourage all students and their parents or guardians to take the time to read through them carefully. These reports are a valuable opportunity to reflect on what has been achieved so far, as well as to identify areas for growth and improvement moving into the second half of the year.

A reminder that Learning Conversations will take place at the start of Term 3. These conversations are a great chance to connect with teachers, discuss progress, and set clear goals for the term ahead. Appointment bookings will be available online soon—please keep an eye on Compass and the school newsletter for details.

As we head into the holidays, make sure you take some well-earned time off to rest, recharge, and enjoy a break. You've all earned it!

Mr G’s Study Tip:

“Holidays are a great time to reset. If you want to keep your brain ticking, try 15–20 minutes of light revision every few days—just enough to stay fresh without burning out.”

Enjoy the break, and we look forward to a big and exciting Term 3 ahead!

Year 12

This has been a very long term and the year 12s have worked hard to stay focused and on top of the workload.  We have talked a bit about stamina and these students have reached deep to tap into theirs as we get through the 11-week term.

The students have continued working with Stephanie and Mia in the Regional Pathways Program and were presented with their hoodies today, in a more informal session.  When studies allow some students have helped in primary classrooms where they have proved to be a great help to the teachers.

The term break may be approaching, but that doesn’t mean a time to rest for our students.  Some have booked to go to revision lectures, others have organised work experience to help them decide next steps and others will be working hard on study notes and part-time employment.

Next term will be very busy as VTAC forms are filled in and applications are started.  More career meetings will occur as we lock in pathways for life after secondary college.

This is the time to take extra care of yourself.  Get plenty of sleep, eat well and stay warm.

Finally we would like to wish Mrs Mediwaththe good luck in her new school. We will miss her 'calm' in Homeroom.
