EXPLORING GENETICS

VCE Biology Students Explore Genetics at Yarra Ranges Tech School

By Annie Rajulu (Secondary Teacher)

Our Year 11 VCE Biology students recently took part in a valuable and engaging excursion to the Yarra Ranges Tech School. The day was designed to support their understanding of key concepts in Genetics, Unit 2: Area of Study 1, by linking classroom learning with hands-on scientific investigation.

Throughout the day, students deepened their knowledge of how traits are passed from one generation to the next, the role of DNA in inheritance, and how genetic variation contributes to the diversity of life. They participated in a range of interactive workshops and practical activities that brought these complex concepts to life.

One of the highlights of the excursion was the opportunity to carry out gel electrophoresis and genetic testing, powerful techniques used to diagnose genetic conditions and track inheritance patterns. Through these activities, students also developed skills in interpreting pedigree charts and identifying inheritance trends.

Students were enthusiastic, engaged, and eager to learn, asking thoughtful questions and participating actively in each task. Many expressed their excitement about learning new laboratory skills and enjoyed the opportunity to apply their knowledge in a real-world context.

Overall, the excursion was a resounding success. It not only strengthened the students’ understanding of genetics but also built their confidence and curiosity as budding biologists. We look forward to seeing how this experience supports them in their upcoming assessments.
