Safer Internet Day
Safer Internet Day is a global day of action dedicated to raising awareness of online safety. It takes place on Tuesday, the 10th February. On this day, the CyberSafety Project came and visited Corpus Christi School. They held workshops with each of our Learning Communities as well as with staff.
Why is Safer Internet Day important?
The internet connects us more than ever – it’s where we learn, work, socialise and share our lives. But that also means online risks are part of everyday life.
Safer Internet Day is an opportunity to take a moment to talk about what’s really happening online, and think about what we can each do to make it better. Because when we each do something small – whether that’s starting a conversation, sharing a tip or changing a habit – we make a big difference to everyone’s online experience.

Home Reading Years 1 and 2
As part of homework, all children across Prep-Year 6 should be reading each night. Your child may bring home a reader from school or, for our older children, may use a book from home.
Prep - Year 2 - average 10-15 minutes
Year 3 and 4 - average 15 minutes
Year 5 and 6 - average 20 minutes
Learning to read is about listening and understanding as well as working out print. Through hearing stories, children are exposed to a rich and wide vocabulary. This helps them build their own vocabulary and improve their understanding when they listen, which is vital as they start to read. Sharing a book with your child allows you to share adventures and experiences in the safe world of the book. It allows you to ask questions, talk about what has happened and decide what you think together.
At the moment, the Year Preps are beginning their sound journey. Their home reading will involve practising sounds they have learnt for the next few weeks. After they have learnt the S, A, T, P, I, N sounds, they will begin to bring home decodable readers.
Across the Year Prep and Year 1/2 Communities, students will be taking home decodables for their home reading. These books only contain words that can be read using the sounds the children have been taught up to that point. Your child’s teacher will tell your child which book tub they need to choose from. The decodable books include words to blend and tricky words to practise pages. This means that you and your child will be reading the same book over a series of days.
The Year 1 and 2 Community began bringing home readers this week. Teachers have explicitly taught students how to change their readers and how to use the home reading diary. Some students will bring home decodable texts, while others will choose different reading materials, with teachers guiding students on where to select their books from.
Please do not ask your child to bring home more challenging books, as teachers carefully consider a range of information when determining each child’s home reading level. If you have any questions about your child’s home reading, please contact their teacher.
