Safer Internet Day

What is Safer Internet Day?

Safer Internet Day is an annual global event that promotes safe and responsible use of the internet. Each year, it raises awareness about online issues such as cyberbullying, social media safety and protecting personal data.

Why is Safer Internet Day important?

The internet connects us more than ever – it’s where we learn, work, socialise and share our lives. But that also means online risks are part of everyday life.

Safer Internet Day is an opportunity to take a moment to talk about what’s really happening online and think about what we can each do to make it better. Because when we each do something small - whether that’s starting a conversation, sharing a tip or changing a habit - we make a big difference to everyone’s online experience.

During Digital Technologies lessons this week, Year 1-6 students have been participating in important discussions about the MACS eSafe behaviours and activities covering different online safety topics.

Helping your child stay safe online

Supporting your child to ask for help when they are online is key to keeping them safe. The eSafety Commissioner recommends a proactive approach built on open communication and practical boundaries. Start by having regular, calm conversations about their digital lives—treat it like any other part of their day so they feel comfortable coming to you if something goes wrong.

You may like to establish a 'Family Tech Agreement' to set clear expectations around screen time, appropriate apps and where devices can be used (open areas of the home).

Additionally, use technical safeguards like parental controls and privacy settings on apps and games to filter content and limit who can contact them. By combining these safety features with active engagement, you can empower your child to build the resilience and critical thinking skills needed to navigate the online world safely.
