Establishing a positive goodbye routine at morning drop off can make a significant difference for students as they transition into the school day. At Modbury School P–6, we encourage families to develop a consistent farewell routine to help children feel secure and ready to learn. A simple and predictable goodbye — such as a high-five, cuddle, or special wave — reassures your child and strengthens their sense of independence as they enter the classroom.
For younger children, naming the steps of your goodbye (e.g., “We hang your bag, then two hugs, and one wave at the window.”) can foster certainty and reduce worries. It’s natural for children (and sometimes parents!) to feel emotional during drop off. Maintaining calm and cheerful body language provides an extra boost of confidence for your child. Short and consistent goodbyes support smoother transitions and help develop resilience.
We recently shared some tips for a ‘Goodbye Plan’ which you may find useful in helping your child have a successful separation.
