Senior School Report

Welcome back to Term 1. We hope all of our Senior School students and families have had a restful and enjoyable break and are feeling ready for a positive and productive start to the year.
The beginning of Term 1 is an important time to establish strong habits that set the tone for success. Consistent attendance remains a key priority in Senior School every lesson builds on the next, particularly in VCE and VCE-VM, and regular attendance ensures students stay connected, confident and on track with their learning. We also encourage students to continue engaging positively in class, asking questions, seeking feedback, and making the most of the support available to them.
Now is the ideal time for students to establish clear routines for study and homework. Setting aside dedicated study time each evening, organising materials, and planning ahead for SACs and key assessment tasks will help reduce stress and build independence as the term progresses.
We warmly invite families to attend our VCE / VCE-VM Parent & Guardian Information Evening on Wednesday 4th March from 6:00pm – 7:00pm.
This session will provide valuable information about:
- The structure of VCE and VCE-VM
- Expectations, assessment, attendance requirements
- Practical strategies of how families can best support their child throughout the year.
- Pathways information to support your child’s future pathway decisions
Booking is essential and can be made via the following TryBooking link. We look forward to partnering with you to ensure a successful and rewarding year for all Senior School students.
Regards,
George Conway
Assistant Principal - Senior School
Year 12 Welcome
Year 12 Making Every Moment Matter
The Year 12 VCE cohort has hit the ground running. We’ve had a fantastic, high energy start to the year, with a clear focus on one collective goal: making every moment matter. As the students begin the final chapter of their secondary schooling, there is a palpable sense of purpose in the way they are approaching both their studies and their common goal of a successful VCE journey.
A Space of Their Own: The Year 12 VCE Centre
For the first time at the College, our Year 12s now have a dedicated space exclusive to their cohort. This new VCE Centre is designed to be a hub for both collaboration and independent study. With brand-new furniture on the way, we are creating a professional and comfortable learning environment that gives the students a place to call their own. Of course, students also continue to make great use of the library for quiet, focused study.
Orientation Day 1: Skills for Success at Whittlesea Tech
Our first Orientation Day took us to Whittlesea Tech, where the focus was on practical strategies to tackle the year ahead. It wasn't just about the "what," but the "how" of Year 12. Students engaged with a range of external experts, including:
- Literacy & English Workshops: Focused on maximizing marks and sharpening analytical skills for the exam with experienced VCE English assessor and coach Hayley Harrison.
- The Psychology of Study: A session led by a psychologist that broke down how working memory functions and how to build positive study habits that actually stick.
- Building Connections: Workshops on teamwork and "Personal Branding," where students looked ahead to their 2026 ambitions and how they want to present themselves to the world.
Orientation Day 2: Stepping into the Future at La Trobe University
For our second day, the cohort headed to La Trobe University to get a real taste of tertiary life. A highlight of the day was student agency; everyone had the chance to choose a hands-on workshop tailored to their interests, ranging from Anatomy and Health Information Management to the Wildlife Sanctuary, Law, and Business.
Beyond the workshops, students toured the campus and participated in university-style tutorials and VCE careers sessions. Perhaps the most meaningful moment of the day was hearing from past Edgars Creek Secondary College students who have already made the transition to university. Their advice on navigating Year 12 was relatable, honest, and provided our current students with a clear roadmap of where their hard work can lead.
It has been a busy but incredibly productive start. We look forward to seeing this momentum continue throughout the term.
Scored Assessment Begins
Support at home as well as school is vital for student success as our scored School Assessed Coursework (SACs) commence early in Term 1. We ask that families have frequent conversations with students about their upcoming assessments, monitor regular communication from teachers, and play an active role in students’ learning in their final year of high school. Students are provided with checklists of required classwork tasks in order to satisfactorily demonstrate their outcomes for each subject.
A reminder that in line with VCAA requirements, students that are absent for any SAC will need to provide a medical certificate or statutory declaration alongside their completed ‘Application to reschedule a SAC’ form, which can be collected from the Year 12 Office. In the instance that the student is absent for a SAC with a valid certificate, there will be a rescheduled SAC date after school. Students who miss a scheduled SAC date without valid documentation are not eligible to receive a scored outcome, which can impact their ATAR and Year 12 completion. Students are aware that they can be required to sit the task on the very first day that they return.
We thank you for your ongoing support and involvement in our Year 12 students’ learning and engagement.
Year 11 Welcome
A Strong Start to the Year for Our Year 11 VCE Students
The beginning of a new school year always brings a sense of opportunity and our Year 11 VCE students have embraced 2026 with focus and enthusiasm. From the very first week, students have demonstrated a positive mindset, arriving prepared, engaging actively in class discussions, and setting clear goals for the year ahead. It has been pleasing to see the maturity with which the cohort has approached the increased expectations of VCE, showing a willingness to challenge themselves and take ownership of their learning.
Teachers have commented on the strong work ethic already evident across subjects. Students are asking thoughtful questions, completing work consistently, and beginning to build effective routines. Establishing these habits early is critical in VCE, and our Year 11 students have made an impressive start in laying those foundations.
Introducing Our Study Skills Program
To further support students as they transition into the demands of VCE, we have launched a dedicated Study Skills Program, delivered by our teaching staff. This six-session program has been specifically designed to equip students with practical, research-informed strategies to help them adapt successfully to senior studies.
Across the sessions, students will explore the important distinction between study and homework, developing an understanding that homework often involves completing unfinished tasks, while study focuses on practicing skills and revising content. They will learn effective scheduling and organisational techniques to manage their time across multiple subjects, along with strategies for summarising and effective note-taking to deepen understanding.
The program also introduces evidence-based learning techniques such as spaced versus massed study, highlighting why consistent revision over time is more effective than cramming. Students will practice retrieval strategies to strengthen memory and improve long-term retention of knowledge. Finally, sessions will focus on understanding command terms and assessment rubrics, helping students interpret questions accurately and respond with clarity and precision in assessments.
By embedding these skills early in Year 11, we aim to build students’ confidence, independence, and academic resilience. We look forward to seeing our cohort continue to grow as capable, reflective learners throughout the year.
We are excited for what lies ahead and commend our Year 11 students on the excellent start they have made to their VCE journey.
Year 10 Welcome
Settling into Year 10
Year 10 students have made a fantastic start to the year, embracing the motto “Your efforts today shape your tomorrow.” Across classrooms and in the school yard, students are demonstrating a positive attitude, strong work ethic, and a willingness to take responsibility for their learning and behaviour. Expectations have been set high, and it has been great to see students rising to meet them with maturity and focus. Whether it’s engaging in lessons, supporting their peers, or showing respect around the school, Year 10s are already showing that their efforts now will help shape a successful future.
Whittlesea Tech Fellowship Program
Four Year 10 students have also begun their journey in the year-long Whittlesea Tech Fellowship program, which focuses on The Creation of Art Through Technology. Throughout the program, students will explore the types of art they encounter in their everyday lives and investigate the tools and technologies used to create it. They will develop an understanding of how art is produced, shared, and experienced, while also examining how context influences the way we define and interpret art. A key part of the fellowship involves building confidence in discussing artistic ideas and engaging in thoughtful conversations about creative work. Students will also have the opportunity to explore the role of generative AI in the creation of art, gaining insight into how emerging technologies are shaping modern artistic expression.
Building Relationships with our Cohort
There has been a strong focus this term on building positive relationships across the cohort, with a particular emphasis on respect. To support this, we have introduced a range of cohort events, including dedicated spaces for both a girls’ group and boys’ group, where students can come to relax, chat, or play games in a safe and supportive environment. We have also hosted two karaoke lunch times, where students confidently sang their hearts out and enjoyed a fun, inclusive atmosphere together. Moving forward, we will continue to promote student voice and agency by inviting ideas and feedback to help shape future whole cohort activities.
VM Welcome
What a fantastic start it has been for our Year 11 and Year 12 VCE VM students!
The Year 11 students have been busy building strong routines, learning how the Vocational Major program works and developing their teamwork skills. They’ve shown a positive attitude towards hands-on learning and are quickly settling into the expectations of the program.
The Year 12 students have returned with clear direction as they begin their final year of school. They are focused on completing their certificates, strengthening their employability skills and preparing for pathways beyond secondary school, whether that’s further training, apprenticeships or employment.
VM Orientation Day @ Whittlesea Tech School
On Monday 16th February, both year levels attended our VCE VM Orientation Day, and it was a fantastic way to launch the year as one cohort.
The Year 12 students worked on a Safe@Work podcast as part of their Literacy Hurdle Task.
This required them to connect their VET learning from the past year to real-life workplace scenarios. They explored workplace safety responsibilities, employee and employer rights, and practical strategies for staying safe on the job. The task encouraged them to think critically and communicate clearly to engage their audience.
Meanwhile, the Year 11 students created their own Ikigai, a Japanese concept meaning “reason for being.” Through this activity, students explored:
- What they love
- What they’re good at
- What the world needs
- What they could possibly get paid for one day.
This reflective task helped students begin recognising their strengths, interests and possible career directions.
Breakfast Club – Toasties with a Side of Community Spirit
As part of their PDS studies, the VM students have also begun running Breakfast Club twice a week.
Students are responsible for preparing cheese toasties, serving food and packing up.
This hands-on experience supports the development of teamwork, time management, communication along with being lots of fun. Just as importantly, they are contributing positively to the wider ECSC community by making sure students start the day with a warm meal and a friendly face.
VET
The VM students are also thoroughly enjoying their VET programs and, most importantly, taking them seriously.
Across a range of industry areas, students have been developing practical, job-ready skills and gaining valuable hands-on experience. They understand that VET is not just another class, rather it is real training for real careers. Attendance, organisation and workplace expectations are key focuses, and it has been pleasing to see students stepping up to meet industry standards.
The commitment shown in VET classes reflects the growing maturity of our VM cohort as they prepare for employment and further training pathways.
