Mathematics

Welcome back to the new school year to our Kellyville High School students’ and their families. This year students in Year 7 to 10 will engage in the areas of study related to:

  • Number and algebra
  • Measurement and space
  • Statistics and probability
  •

The overarching outcome of all these areas of study is “working mathematically” which focuses on students being able to develop the skills of: Communicating, Understanding and Fluency, Reasoning and Problem Solving.

The syllabus is divided into a “Core-Path” structure which allows flexibility in the creation of different pathways for students into Stage 6. The aim is for students to show achievement of the Core outcomes and as many Path outcomes as possible by the end of Stage 5, however, understanding of the Core outcomes is the key consideration.

The core outcomes provide the necessary foundation for Mathematics Standard 2 in Stage 6. Students who have required ongoing support achieving the Stage 5 core outcomes should consider studying the Mathematics Standard 1 or Numeracy CEC course in Stage 6. In Stage 5 students who wish to study the Mathematics Advanced or Mathematics Extension courses would need to successfully engage in studying selected Pathways topics.

The Middle School students will be studying the following topics this term:

  • Year 7 – Computation with Integers and Data Classification and Visualisation.
  • Year 8 – Rates and Ratios, Indices and Data Analysis.
  • Year 9 – Financial Mathematics A (Core), Indices A (Core) & B (Path), Algebraic Techniques A (Core), Probability A (Core) & B (Path).

The Senior School students will be studying the following areas, according to their level of study:

  • Year 10 –Trigonometry A (Core) & B (Core), Properties of Geometrical Figures A (Core), Financial Mathematics B (Core), Non-Linear Relationships A (Core), B (Core) & C (Path), Data Analysis B (Core), Indices C (Path), Algebraic Techniques B (Path).
  • Year 11:

    - Mathematics Standard - Formulae and Equations and Earning Money.

    - Mathematics Advanced - Working with Functions and Trigonometry.

    - Mathematics Extension 1 – Further work with functions (Inequalities) and Polynomials.

  • Year 12:

    - Mathematics Standard 1 - Right-angled Triangles, Investments and Depreciation and Loans.

    - Mathematics Standard 2 - Bivariate Data Analysis, The Normal Distribution and Investments and Depreciation and Loans.

    - Mathematics Advanced - The first and second derivatives, Applications of the derivative, The anti-derivative and Areas and the definite integral.

    - Mathematics Extension 1 – Further Calculus Skills, Further area and volume of solid of revolution, Projectile motion and Bernoulli and binomial distributions.

    - Mathematics Extension 2 - Introduction to three dimensional vectors, Further operations with three dimensional vectors, Vectors and vector equations of lines and Further Integration.

Students in the Senior School will also engage in the completion of assessment tasks this term. Year 10 students will sit a class test in Week 8, Year 11 Mathematics Extension 1 will sit a class test in Week 8 and Year 11 Mathematics Advanced and Year 11 Mathematics Standard will sit their test in Week 9. Finally, our Year 12 Mathematics students will sit a timed writing task during Weeks 6/7. Students in the Senior School should ensure that they prepare fully for these tasks by making use of their Assessment Notification and by seeking any additional support required from their teachers.
