Learning in the classroom
Explicit, evidence-based Literacy instruction has begun strongly across all classrooms this term. Each day starts with Phonics and Spelling. In Prep, students focus on connecting graphemes to sounds, while students in Years 5 and 6 explore morphology and etymology.
Reading sessions follow, with students building skills in decoding, fluency, vocabulary, background knowledge and comprehension. After a short brain break, students move into explicit Writing lessons.
Our Prep students are learning to blend phonemes to form short words. In other year levels, students complete daily sentence-level writing tasks to develop sophisticated, grammatically accurate sentences. These skills are then extended into longer texts, including recounts, procedures, narratives and persuasive writing.
Students in Years 3 and 5 are also working through all components of the structured Literacy program using NAPLAN-style materials. This preparation is designed to build students’ confidence and familiarity with the test format, so they feel well-prepared to demonstrate their learning.
