The Resilience Project

We are well and truly underway in Term 1! In the first few weeks, our students have been learning what TRP is, what the lessons will look like and what our goals are in these lessons. Students are beginning to learn what different emotions are and look like and also participating in discussions around what are healthy habits vs unhealthy habits.
Starting the year with this learning is intentional. The beginning of the year is a time of new friendships, new expectations and sometimes new nerves. By having these lessons and discussions early in the school year, we are giving students tools to confidently navigate change, manage setbacks and build strong, respectful relationships.
Research consistently shows that explicitly teaching wellbeing improves student engagement, learning outcomes and overall happiness at school. When children feel safe, connected and emotionally supported, they are better able to focus, take risks in their learning and bounce back from challenges.
At John Paul II, resilience is not about “toughing it out” — it’s about building skills, practising self-awareness and knowing how to seek support when needed.
We have been reinforcing our GEM concepts (Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness) and we would love to continue to see these strategies used at school and at home.At home, you might:
- Share one thing you’re grateful for at dinner
- Talk about how someone else might be feeling in a situation
- Take a few slow breaths together before bedtime
Model positive self-talk when things don’t go to plan
We are excited to keep moving forward in 2026 with The Resilience Project!
