A refresh: Our Mission and Values

At the heart of Girton is a clear and enduring purpose.

As part of recent reflection and forward planning, we’ve updated our Mission and Values.

Our mission is clear: We educate and empower young people to achieve and flourish in their aspirations for life.

Our values will help us achieve this mission:

Educational Excellence

We are committed to educational excellence, providing a knowledge-rich curriculum so that students strive for mastery, learn to think critically and creatively and embrace challenges in focused and purposeful learning environments.

Determination

We encourage a culture of personal growth, resilience and emotional strength, inspiring every individual to strive for success through hard work, dedication and unwavering commitment.

Respect

We embrace a culture of respect where every person is valued, differences are celebrated and interactions build trust and belonging.

Curiosity

We celebrate curiosity as the spark for innovation, empowering students to seek knowledge, challenge assumptions and embrace new perspectives.

Compassion

We act with empathy and kindness, valuing every individual. We foster a culture where everyone feels acknowledged, heard and uplifted.

Connection

We create meaningful relationships within our school community, valuing collaboration and mutual respect as the foundation of a supportive and inclusive environment.

While the language may seem new, the essence remains the same. Informed by the Christian ethos on which Girton was founded, these values define what it means to be a Girtonian - who we are and what we aspire to be.

Over the past few weeks, we’ve also started introducing a refreshed visual identity for the school, including an updated school crest. This is an exciting step for Girton — it honours our history while looking confidently to the future.

When our crest was first designed, it featured the three Houses that existed at the time. Our new version now represents all of Girton, offering a more complete and united symbol of our school community.

Across the year, you’ll begin to see the updated branding appear around the school, on signage, digital platforms, printed materials and community communications. This will happen gradually, in a thoughtful and sustainable way, to ensure the transition feels smooth and respectful of our resources.

We also know that visual identity connects closely with the school uniform. Any updates to the uniform will happen slowly over several years, so families can continue to use existing items and avoid unnecessary waste. We’ll share more details later this year once we’ve reviewed your feedback from the recent Girton Grammar School Uniform Survey and spoken further with our school community.

Girton’s identity has always been shaped by its people, and this refresh is simply a clearer reflection of what we have built together - a school grounded in tradition, enriched by community and committed to preparing young people to flourish in their aspirations for life.

You can read more about Girton's Mission and Values on our website - which has also enjoyed a refresh!

Celebrating Girton’s Mission and Values

On Friday 6 February, our teachers and staff gathered for a special event to celebrate the launch of our newly articulated Mission and Values.

While the language is newly refined, the values themselves are not new. They capture the heart of what Girton has always stood for, and what our young people experience every day at school: Educational Excellence, Determination, Respect, Curiosity, Compassion and Connection.

These six values are deeply embedded in the way our staff teach, support and care for students, and in the way our community interacts with one another. Our Mission sits at the centre of our work - “We educate and empower young people to achieve and flourish in their aspirations for life”.

The staff launch provided an opportunity for us to come together and reflect on the culture that underpins every classroom, every House, every conversation and every act of care at Girton. It was also a chance to celebrate the educators and professional services staff who bring these values to life each day for our students.

We look forward to continuing to share more about our Mission and Values in the coming months, and to working in partnership with families as we support every student to flourish.
