In the Classroom
Year 7 & 8 Chinese, Year 9 Velocity Lab & Year 9 Exercise Science

Velocity Lab in Year 9 kicked off the year exploring different types of energy and Newton’s laws of motion. To investigate friction, students built mini hovercrafts from CDs, balloons, and bottle tops, showing how a cushion of air helps objects glide with less resistance. This foundation will support their next challenge: designing and 3D‑printing their own balloon‑powered cars.

I enjoy studying Exercise Science a lot. We learn about skills and health related fitness components, such as muscular endurance, agility, coordination, reaction-time, and flexibility. We also did practical activities that aligned with our theory, which I found really fun. One of our other topics was nutrients, specifically micronutrients and macronutrients. During these lessons we learnt how they fuel our body, what they are, and how they are essential for energy, growth and recovery. I found it fascinating how such minerals and vitamins are used to support bodily functions. Overall, Exercise Science is one of my favourite subjects, as it is both enjoyable and educational.

Chinese New Year
Over the past two weeks, students in Chinese classes have been learning about Chinese New Year and its cultural significance. Students created traditional paper cuttings, practised calligraphy by writing the character “福” (good luck) and designed their own red envelopes. These hands-on activities helped students develop their understanding of Chinese culture. Students had a great time exploring the traditions and customs of how Chinese New Year is celebrated in China and around the world.

I used a traditional Chinese paint brush to write ‘fu’ (福)with ink. I felt confident and to be honest it was a bit hard. I want to do calligraphy again because I can improve my skills.
Nandini (7D)
I wrote ‘fu’ in calligraphy. I used ink and a traditional brush. I feel good because I think it was fun and I did great. I want to do it more because it was such a great experience for me and it was fun.
Muhammad (7D)
We practised calligraphy using ink and water. It felt good as we were using traditional Chinese way of writing letters. I would like to do more as I get to practise traditional Chinese culture.
