Year 7 Immunisations

Monday 23rd March

Wyndham Council’s Immunisation service offers two important vaccines to all Year 7 students. This year vaccinations will be taking place on Monday 23rd March.

Which vaccines are offered?

GARDASIL®9 - The human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine protects against nine HPV types which can cause cervical cancer in women, and genital warts and other HPV-related cancers in both men and women. The vaccine provides best protection when given at a younger age and before a person becomes sexually active, as the vaccine prevents disease but does not treat existing HPV infections.

BOOSTRIX – The vaccine contains diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis (Whooping Cough). Your child is likely to have been vaccinated against these diseases as young babies or children. Adolescents are recommended to have a booster dose to provide continuing protection against diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis into adulthood.

How are they given?

A single dose of the HPV vaccine, given into the arm, provides protection against the human papillomavirus for all healthy adolescents. (Please note- Some adolescents may need a three-dose course of Gardasil®9 vaccine. Three doses of Gardasil®9 vaccine are recommended for a person who has a disease, or is having treatment, which causes low immunity. If you think your child may need three doses, we recommend you speak to your child’s GP or specialist, and our immunisation team.)

A single dose of Boostrix given into the arm, boosts your child’s immunity to diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis (Whooping Cough).

Vaccines are administered by our experienced Registered Nurses who are qualified Nurse Immunisers, and all students remain under observation for a minimum of 15 minutes following vaccination, in case of reactions.
