Visual Art - Ms Denise

We have had a very productive start in Visual Arts.
All students have been immersed and engaged in a wide variety of projects.
PREP
Prep students commenced their Visual Arts journey by completing artwork in response to picture books. Students engaged with the delightful story ‘Beautiful Oops’ by Barney Saltzberg, the inspiring tale teaches us that mistakes can lead to wonderful creations. Another picture book the class focused on was ‘The Dot’ by Peter H Reynolds. Concentrating on the main character and what she learns about art and confidence. Students created a dot inspired artwork by creatively drawing a picture around the dot. The second dot artwork was a collage which allowed students to practice their cutting skills by making an abstract dot artwork with assorted sized dots.
Year 1 and 2 students have focused on the element of line and shape by drawing zentangle line patterns and cutting out shapes inspired by Henri Matisse’s ‘drawing with scissors’.
Students were introduced to zentangles, an art form that utilises repetitive patterns to create intricate designs. Through this activity students learned that lines can be simple and complex transforming their hand outlines into beautiful patterns.
The Matisse inspired collage enabled students to make shapes emulated by the artist including geometric, organic, repetitive, positive and negative shapes.
YEAR 3 & 4
Year 3 and 4 students have been focusing on art landscapes commencing the term by looking at the folk art and abstract patterns found in Karla Gerard's landscapes and later contrasting these with the iconic Australian landscape artwork of Roberts, McCubbin and Streeton. Students commenced the term by being introduced to the unique and colourful works of Karla Gerard and emulated their own interpretation of the artist’s work.
Inspired by the Australian artists, students have created mixed media artwork by focusing on Australian scenery such as a mountain, forest or beach.
YEAR 5 & 6
Year 5 and 6 students have focused on still life art by exploring a variety of techniques and concepts that enhanced their understanding of composition and colour. They commenced the term by tracing a monochromatic still life composition, this helped students by focusing on light and shadow without the distraction of multiple colours.
The class then chose a theme and arranged a group of objects creating a composition and considered key elements such as overlapping, proportion and hierarchy. Students drew and finally painted their still life using watercolour paints.
