Year 8 Feature

Term two has been a busy term for Year 8. They have continued to engage in wonderful learning activities in the classroom and have been lucky to experience a number of activities outside of the classroom which have complemented their learning.

On Wednesday 22nd May, Year 8 took part in a History incursion called ‘Medieval Day’. The day involved performances and role plays. The girls were shown various medieval equipment, were able to try on medieval armour and made their own coat of arms. This immersive experience complemented the work they have been doing in History in a fun and hands on approach.

On Tuesday 31st May, all of Year 8 gathered at the Baptist Church at Caddens for our Reflection Day. The theme of the day was “Love is patient, love is kind!” Students were engaged in a number of activities during the day including a guided meditation, creative activities and Scripture reflection. We ended the day with a liturgy where we reflected on how we can spread love and kindness. A highlight of the day was coming together with friends for a picnic lunch in the park, where we could enjoy each other’s company and the beautiful weather.

On Tuesday 4th June, Year 8 students and their Science teachers made the short journey to Sydney Zoo. At the zoo the students visited each of the featured areas where they used their observation skills to collect information on various animals and their habitats. Some of the favourite animals on the day were the meerkats, capybaras and koalas.

On Diversity Day, Year 8 were very well represented in the cultural dances. It was wonderful to see so many Year 8s dancing their cultural dances with great pride and passion. A number of students also wore their cultural dress or colours and got into the spirit of the day.

Year 8 students have continued to shine in various sports. We have had representatives on the college soccer, netball and oz tag teams. A number of year 8 students also represented the college in our various dance troupes. During Thursday afternoon sport, our other Year 8 students have engaged in house sport activities such as soccer and touch footy.

In English classes this term Year 8 have been enjoying studying Indigenous Poetry. They have analysed the experiences of the Australian Aboriginal people as presented by poets such as Oodgeroo Noonuccal and Archie Roach. Students have also reflected on the close connection with the land and the role nature plays in their belief systems. This unit will culminate with an incursion next Monday where the performance group Poetry in Action will present a hilarious and interactive presentation on the power of poetry as a way of expressing our thoughts and ideas.

In TAS students have been making CAM toys and making tote bags. They are learning a number of new skills and creating some wonderful projects.

Our wonderful Year 8 students have continued to add to their service hours in a number of ways. Some students have served by making sandwiches and snack packs for the Vinnies Van and being on the flag roster. We also had students volunteer to help at the 50th Anniversary celebration. Many year 8 students have brought in scarves to support the Vinnies Winter Appeal. I encourage our Year 8 students to continue to look for ways to serve others.

Next term will be an exciting time for Year 8 as they begin the process of choosing their electives for Year 9 and 10.
