Dear Families,
As part of our ongoing commitment to creating a safe and respectful environment for all our students, we recently shared the important social story below, with our learners. This story focused on understanding personal boundaries and the importance of respecting one another’s space.
The key points we included were:
Asking Before Touching: We emphasised the importance of asking for permission before any physical interaction, such as high-fives, hugs, or any other forms of touch. This helps ensure that everyone feels comfortable and respected.
The Right to Say "No": We reinforced that every child has the right to say "no" if they do not want to be touched. It’s important that students understand they are in control of their own bodies and that their peers must respect their choices.
Respecting Each Other’s Decisions: We taught the children that if someone says "no" to a high-five or hug, it’s essential to respect that decision without feeling hurt or upset.
Our goal is to help children develop a strong sense of personal boundaries while also fostering a culture of respect and understanding within our school community. We encourage you to continue this conversation at home, reinforcing these important values and discussing how your child feels about the story we shared.
In the next two weeks, teachers will be sharing the Student Code of Conduct with all children so they have the opportunity to discuss and understand the behaviours that are and are not expected at school. This is located on our school website or you can access this on PAM in the knowledge banks.
Cases of pertussis (whooping cough) are increasing in Victoria. There have been around 4 times the number of pertussis cases in 2024 than for the whole of 2023. Children aged 10-12 years account for more than one-third of all notified cases. To prevent the spread of whooping cough, ensure you and your family are up to date with immunisations and follow good hygiene practices.
