Berry Street Education Model Day 1: Strengthening Our School Community

Dear Parents and Friends,

We are excited to share with you some insights from the first day of our professional development program centred around the Berry Street Education Model (BSEM) our staff were engaged in yesterday. This model is designed to enhance our school's ability to support the wellbeing and academic success of all students. Over the next few weeks, our staff will be immersed in this transformative approach, which we believe will greatly benefit our entire school community.

Day 1 Focus: Body

The first day of the BSEM training focused on the concept of "Body." This is the foundational phase of the model, emphasising the importance of creating a safe, predictable, and physically calm learning environment. Here are some key takeaways from Day 1:

  1. Building Safety and Predictability: Our staff learned strategies to ensure that students feel safe and secure in the classroom. This includes establishing clear routines and expectations, which are essential for creating a stable environment where students can focus on learning.
  2. Self-Regulation Techniques: We explored various techniques that help students manage their energy levels and emotions. These include mindfulness exercises, breathing techniques, and sensory tools that can be integrated into the daily classroom routine. By teaching students how to regulate their bodies, we empower them to take control of their own learning and behaviour.
  3. The Power of Calm: A calm classroom is a productive classroom. We discussed the impact of teacher behaviour on student behaviour, and how maintaining a calm and composed presence can help de-escalate situations and foster a positive learning environment.
  4. Mindful Movement: Physical movement is essential for students to stay engaged and focused. We learned about incorporating mindful movement activities into the school day, which not only help students stay physically active but also enhance their cognitive function and emotional wellbeing.

Why This Matters

The "Body" phase of the Berry Street Education Model is crucial because it lays the groundwork for the subsequent phases of the model: "Relationship," "Stamina," "Engagement," and "Character." By focusing on the physical and emotional safety of our students, we are creating an environment where they can thrive academically and socially.

How You Can Support at Home

You can reinforce the principles of the "Body" phase at home by:

  • Establishing Routines: Help your child establish and stick to daily routines, including regular times for reading, meals, and sleep.
  • Encouraging Calm: Practice calming techniques like deep breathing or mindfulness exercises together, especially during stressful moments.
  • Promoting Physical Activity: Encourage your child to engage in physical activities that they enjoy, which will help them manage their energy and stay focused.

We are committed to creating a school environment where every student feels safe, valued, and ready to learn. The Berry Street Education Model is an important step in that direction, and we look forward to sharing more updates with you as we continue our journey.

Thank you for your continued support in making our school a place where all students can succeed.

Kindest regards,

Jen Gulavin
