5/6 REFLECTION

5/6 TERM 2

What a terrific term we’ve had in 5/6! Throughout the term it has been great to see students thriving both in the classroom and outside with their peers. Students have taken each challenge in their stride and through collaboration they have created, discussed and displayed many different skills. We’re all really proud and cannot wait to see what semester 2 brings.

Students have enjoyed learning new concepts through mathematics, enjoying units on fractions, area and perimeter, multiplicative thinking and linking this with their understanding of division. Students have also enjoyed learning many new maths games, and engaging with their peers to discuss their strategies and thinking.

It has been fantastic to see students participate in Book Club this term, they’ve caught up weekly and enjoyed discussing their thinking with others. Students have had the opportunity to expand their reading through Book Club and through our class novel, Out of my Mind. It has been nice to see students engage and be excited towards their reading.

Writing has opened up many opportunities for students to express themselves and to experiment with different genres. We have had a big focus on Growth Mindset and have connected this to our writing pieces this term.

Our Inquiry units have really engaged our learners, we have looked at Australian History through our camp experience and in class. We had the opportunity to study Natural Disasters and the impact they have on communities.

It has been pleasing and exciting to see our students lead. Through experiences such as coaching, buddies, visiting local kindergartens and many others, our students have thrived and soaked up every opportunity.

Below are a few reflections from some of our students:

This term the 5/6s journeyed to Log Cabin Camp for this year’s

camp in Creswick, Ballarat. It was a 2-hour drive, and the camp had some of the best food of all the camps we’ve been to. The students got the opportunity to wander through history as we visited Sovereign Hill on day 2 of camp. Students gathered in groups with an adult as they explored history at the gold mines.

On Thursday 18th of April, we competed in the 5/6 Summer Gala Day. The sports were: European Handball, T-ball and Volleyball. Two of the teams even got into the finals!

Then, on Friday 21 of June, we had our 5/6 Winter Gala Day. Soccer travelled to Koonung Reserve, while Netball travelled to Sportlink, Vermont South.

Curriculum:

In our Inquiry unit, we have been focusing on science. First we studied plate tectonics- the parts that make up the earth’s continents and the crust. We have also learned about natural disasters;  Earthquakes and the Richter Scale, Volcanoes, Tsunamis, and Cyclones. In reading we have been unravelling the captivating and hooking story of Melody, and her challenges with Cerebral Palsy in the fabulous book Out of My Mind by Sharon M. Draper. We have progressed far in the book and can’t wait to hear more about Melody! Hey, sorry to interrupt, and I know this is for the newsletter, but I SERIOUSLY recommend this book. To wrap it up, this has been a wonderful term and I hope next term it’s as AWESOME as this one!

At the start of the term the 5/6s had Summer Gala Day! For the sports we had T-ball, Volleystars and European handball, unfortunately none of our teams made it into the next round but overall, we all enjoyed the day!

Not long after we had camp! One of the most exciting events that everyone looks forward to every year. The camp that we went to was Log Cabin Camp in Creswick, it was supposed to be a 1 hour and 45 minute drive but all of the kids on the bus were dying to go to the toilet so we stopped, and then it ended up being 2 hours. While we were at camp we did many fun and exciting activities such as the Giant Swing, Leap of Faith, Zipline and many others. On the second day we all got a bus to Sovereign Hill! In the middle of the term all of the students had a history project which connected with Sovereign Hill about Australian history. We all had to make a diorama about an Australian event, an example is the Gold Rush. We enjoyed writing an info report as well. One day all of the kids made a museum in the 5 / 6 building and presented it to all of the different grades and teachers.

In week 10 we all went to have another Gala day! The options were Football, Soccer and Netball, but unfortunately, we didn't have enough people for the Football team so we couldn't play that sport. All the teams did very well but sadly no teams made it into the next round. And that's the end of term 2!

Term 2 in the 5/6 building 🙂

We’ve had multiple exciting things happen in term 2! We’ve had Camp, Gala days and lots more! Let's start with the new teacher! You might know Anna, she joined this year and in term 2 we got to know her better. We’ve also had a history diorama presentation. What's that you may ask? Well it's about where the teacher chose our groups and we got to research about history that happened in Australia. For example like The Blue Mountains, The Gold Rush, The frontier conflict and many more.

Once we got information about the topic we chose, we got to make a diorama. All of them were amazing! There were alot of creative ones like painting a rock gold so it looked like a gold nugget!

Next up was camp! We went to Log Cabin Camp which was in Ballarat. The food was amazing! We also went to Sovereign Hill there! The staff were nice and the cabins were good quality. Everyone had fun! There was The giant swing, Leap of faith, orienteering and the zipline. There's probably more information about it.

One of the most exciting things was Anna's fake wedding! Students from 5/6C got to make decorations, do DJ stuff, Eat food and dance! Anna was going to get married in America on the school holidays and of course 5/6C wanted to come! That gave the idea of the fake wedding. My class (5/6C) got to eat the food! There was also a performance with Inez, Parinaz, Yuxi and I, dancing to paper rings.

Some of our year six leaders got to coach the 3/4s winter gala day. For the winter gala day our amazing coaches were Inez, Yvette, Matilda and I were coaching netball. Georgia did T-ball and Mani and Quinn coached Soccer!

We also went to gala day. The three sports were Netball, Football and Soccer. Football got cancelled because there weren't enough players. For netball we went to sportlink vermont south. As soon as we went in, everyone was looking at the vending machine. Once we played a few rounds everyone ran to the vending machine. We broke it a few times but they fixed it. One of the teams got into the semifinals but unfortunately lost by a few points.

We also got another new teacher. Her name is Ms Pierce and she teaches Performing Arts instead of Mr wong. She's Amazing and makes up great games for us to play. She also helps take the state school team to rehearsals even though she's never done that before, she's amazing at it!

We’ve had a great term with so many fun activities.
