Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics

On Thursday 6th June, I was delighted to attend the Principal and Numeracy Leaders Day with Marika Ferguson and Vicki Tzimos to listen to the guest speaker Dr Peter Liljedahal talk about 'Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics'. Dr. Peter Liljedahl is a Professor of Mathematics Education at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, Canada, a former school teacher, researcher in Mathematics and the author of a number of publications.

Dr Liljedahal discussed the findings of his research and the 14 teaching practices for enhanced learning, including. Dr Liljedahal uses problem solving tasks to promote critical thinking and his strategies encourage self-directed learning.

Our Mathematics specialist teacher Mrs Rebecca Gordon, this week, was able to run her classes demonstrating these practices which included a thinking task with visibly random grouping and vertical non-permanent surfaces. 1G were enthusiastic participants in the class and were able to show and explain their thinking in varied ways.
